88 900s Key Problem

Just bought an 88 900s with ignition switch problems.  The former owner
was turning the ignition with a flathead screwdriver because he claimed
the key he had was flimsy and would bend or break off if inserted in
the keyhole.  I started the car a few times with the screwdriver and
now it won't start at all. Is there some other way I can get the car
moving so I can take it to the shop?

Will the key turn enough to disengage the gearshift lock (so you can put
it into gear)?

If so, then you can jumber the switch to start it. You'll need to remove
the plastic centre console, the panel where your keys normally sit.

If not, then you have a slightly bigger job. You will need to make a
special 3 pointed tool in order to remove the casting which retains the
ignition lock.

No.  The screwdriver won't turn the cylinder at all.

Ok, get to work removing the centre console. Do you have a (Haynes or
Bentley) manual?

This looks like it's gonna be over my head.  I'm gettin' ready to call
the tow truck. Thanks.

It isn't particularly difficult, but it would probably take you a few
hours since it's your first time.
