I bought a 5 speed gear box for my 94 cde.  The label on the gear box
says FM-57001.  From what I understand it is from a LPT engine.  The
FPT version uses a gear box with FM57101 designation.  What's the
difference?

I am converting the cde from auto to 5 speed.  The 94 cde is FPT.

small diameter tripods vs large diameter? Check quasi's site for more
info. The small diameter were for the LPT and seem to be fine. If they
wear out, replace with large diameter ones.

You'll need to either;
1.    Replace the half shafts to match the tranny (inner joints on the
heavier 1/2 shafts won't fit the LPT tranny )
2.    Replace the inner joint cups on the tranny
