saab 900s '96 battery drain

Hi,

I own a Saab 900s from 1998 (model '96) which drains the battery in 6
or 7 months. The car functions without problems and doesn't indicate a
problem in the battery until one day it doesn't start the engine. I
bought it second hand with a 55 amps battery. When the battery became
dead, I bought a 72 amps battery hoping it will last more, but it
lasted only 7 months. Now I have bought a Bosch battery for it, and
Bosch says that the correct one is a 55 amps battery. Now I fear that
in a few months the new battery will be dead also, but I also fear to
explain this to the Saab Service because electric problems are
difficult to find and perhaps they charge a lot for finding the
problem and they are nor able to solve it. Did you have this problem
with your Saab and find the reason?

Thanks in advance and kind regards from Barcelona, Spain,

Oscar

Something is not switching off.  First step is to measure how much current
the car is drawing, and then to remove one fuse at a time until you see
a dramatic drop in current.  When you find that, you know what to fix.
Not many circuits should be active when the car is off; either one
is staying active when it shouldn't (not likely), or one of the circuits
which is normally on when the car is off is the problem.

Until you know which circuit it is, there's no further to go.

Check the current (amps) output of your alternator, if there is no
current output, or too small, you have a blown diode in the diode trio.

You're still bored, eh?  And you still don't know the difference between
a load not shutting off, and a charging problem.

Hello, Oscar,

I was doing a research trying to understand whether my battery is just old
an needs to be replaced, or whether there is an electrical problem, and a
search on Google on "Saab Battery" brings some interesting links. For
example:
http://www.autohausaz.com/saab-auto-parts/saab-electrical-systems.html gives
a long list of battery problems shared between Saabs and Acuras (a brand
name for high-end Hondas in the US) with the same Bosch electricals.

Thanks,

-Dima

Dear Dima,
there is something fishy with the article you mention:
It says:

" 1992 Saab 318i models ..."
There is no Saab 318. There IS a BMW 318 though....

" Some 1982 Saab Accords ... "
-> There are no Saabs like these, there are Honda's like these though....

"Owners of 1994 XJ6s and XJ12s "
-> There is no Saab XJ6 or 12. There is Jaguar XJ6 though ...

" Owners of Saab 911s "
-> There is no Saab 911, there is Porsche 911 though ...

But there is useful info in that article, just forget the Brand specific
info.

Regards,
Richard.

Richard,

There is a lot of confusing naming in the article, I agree, but the
information is useful nonetheless.
