If Trollhattan loses, will this mark a slow death for Saab? Maybe not, no
one seems to care that BMWs and Toyotas are made right here in the
US....they certainly haven't lost their identities.

That and SAAB is really not the ultra-unique marquee that it once was.

Seems there are no loosers judging by the press release from a few days ago?
New Cadillac BLS to be built in GM's Trollhättan plant
- Start of production in spring 2006
- BLS features Cadillac’s first-ever turbo diesel, left or right-hand drive
Zurich. General Motors announced at the Geneva Motor Show today that
the new Cadillac BLS will be built at GM’s Trollhättan plant in Sweden.
The BLS is scheduled to reach the market in spring 2006. A show car
version of Cadillac BLS is displayed at the Geneva Motor Show 2005.
GM’s Trollhättan plant has a long tradition of building premium products
for global markets. As of 2006 the GM plant will produce Cadillac BLS,
Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-5.
Cadillac BLS is specifically targeted to meet the needs of the European
customer. The front-wheel-drive four-door sedan with its clear, sharply
defined contours, striking wedge shape and elegant interior, continues
Cadillac's characteristic design language. "Premium is not a question
of vehicle size but purely of excellence," said Bob Lutz, responsible at
GM for product development. "And in this aspect, the Cadillac BLS will
definitely be a top player in its league."
>From a technical point of view, the Cadillac BLS will ring in a new
era in brand history: For the first time, a turbo diesel variant will be
available. Like the gasoline versions, the turbo diesel variant will be
positioned at the upper end of the performance scale. Cadillac BLS will
furthermore offer the dynamic driving performance customers have come to
expect from this brand. For countries where the traffic moves on the
left like the UK, the Cadillac BLS will also be available with
right-hand drive.

Ehmmm, SAAB can loose its identity wherever it is made. The two car
makers you mention are independent companies and SAAB isn't. It all
comes down to GM and how much they diferentiate the brand, SAAB 9-2 for
example :-)

Is the BLS based on the epsilon platform?
J. Harris - 04 Mar 2005 12:51 GMT
Autoweek
The Epsilon platform is a structure Opel and Saab developed jointly that
some of GM's best-selling cars will ride on, including the 2004 Chevrolet
Malibu, 2004 Pontiac Grand Am and the 2004 (or '05) Saturn L. Further, there
will be a future Cadillac on Epsilon, as well as a few Holdens in Australia.
In all, the architecture will eventually account annually for some 1.2
million GM cars worldwide.

The German perspective...

According to them, sounds like Russelheim is the shoe-in.
Have the Saab factory employees not also been negotiating wages?

Let's face it, either way Saab is already dead, it's nothing but a name and
a shell under the control of the GM marketing machine and like it or not
it'll never come back. Hold onto your old Saabs, they're the only ones that
will ever exist.
