My 9-3 2004 sustained damage to the front right corner.  It will need a
new bumper, hood, and front fender at minimum.  Is it better to take it
to a SAAB dealer for repair or a independent bodywork shop?

Depends where you are. If you're insured, then do the best option. My saab
dealer don't do bodywork themselves, they will send to an (independent)
bodywork specialist anyway. In that case, ask which bodyshop they are
using or recommending.

If it's an insurance job, in the US anyway, you'll pay the same thing no
matter who does it.  I prefer to take it into the Saab dealer & let them
have whoever they have do the work, do the work.  Then, if there are issues,
the business relationship I've built with the dealer can be leveraged to
get those issues fixed.  It's a regular customer with a problem, rather
than "some guy who walked in off the street for a single job" situation.

If the price is going to be the same, take it to the dealer if he's not
a schmuck.

I am probably going to pay out of pocket due to my insurance situation.
Hood, left fender, left xenon headlight assembly, and front bumper
need to be replaced.  Dave, I think you are from the Milw area.  If I
take it to the dealer it would be Concours.  Can you recommend a good
independent in Milw so I can get a competitive quote?

Larry Gesch is the guy to go to for independant wrench work, but I don't
think he does body work.  He may know someone though, and if you call
him please tell him I sent you.  Country Motors, 920-625-2298.  He's
a good guy and won't steer you wrong.

Personally I would find an independent to do it. My long experience
with body men tells me that you have to shop around though. Some guys
are very good, some are just OK. On a car that new, you want it
perfect. Be sure to talk to them about paint matching. Some colors
are very tough to match. Find out what 3 different guys say about the
paint matching. There is more to it sometimes than just a "computer"
match and manual skill is important. Independents are also more
likely to cut you a deal if they know you are paying out of your own
pocket. If there is no insurance company involved let them know that.

I checked out a few places in Milw and decided to go with PAW Prestige
Autoworks.  Its a very friendly, professional outfit that guarantees its
work for the life of the car.  They have worked on a lot of SAABs.  OEM
parts, paint blending and flex additive for the bumper.  All in all it
is going to cost about $4300 (ouch).  New cars sure are expensive to
repair (nothing happened to the other early 80's car which I hit from
behind; big steel bumper on that sucker).  Decided to submit a claim and
get ready for the premium hike.
