92 9000 engine quit while driving?

We bought a 92 9000 Turbo 2.3l today. It is red. It has a few minor
dings but otherwise is a nice car. A few problems:

ACC blows hot unless you go to manual (temp to "LO"). However I read the
manual and recalibrated the system and that seemed to help. There is one
fault and the seller claims it is a temp sensor in the front bottom of
the car which tells the ACC the temp of outside air.

Coming home, I used the cruise control on and off as practicable.

Last leg of home trip is a steep hill on I-70, starting around 5,500
feet and ending around 7,000 or so. With cruise control on, doing about
70, engine stops. I signal and pull off on shoulder (wife following in
93 900T ragtop).

I switch off ignition and try to start. It starts. We start going again.
Cruise control again. Go maybe a mile (I am in left lane doing 70) and
engine quits again. I turn off while moving (but slow down due to steep
hill) and restart. It starts, I take off again, this time leave cruise
control off. No problems and in about 5 miles I am home.

Any suggestions on these problems or others concerning a 92 9000 w/190k
miles welcome!

Very likely it's the Direct Ignition (DI) cassette. The cassette is not
reasonably repairable, but easily replaced. I think most people in this
group have replaced the DI at one time or another. It should last about
60k miles or more.

I suspect you are right. Do these things fail and leave you sit? Should
I carry a spare?

all good parts and if you need anything just let me know at
saab9turbo@yahoo.com thanks

I don't think this is at all related to the use of the cruise control as
you seem to imply.  Did you get any TCS light when you stalled?

Thanks

I will not blame the cruise control until many further tests. Just
noticed the two times it happened the cruise control was on. Next time I
will turn it off and see if it comes back.

TCS light is on permanently. Previous two owners (seller knows previous
owner) replaced everything in the TCS. Light will not go out but
everything works.

I hear if TCS is bad, it goes into limp home mode. This car is
definately not in that mode!

A friend of mine as a 900 SPG which has the airbag light on and they
could never get it fixed so he has a piece of tape over it.

Yes, I used to have a 92 turbo, and it most definitely went into limp
home mode any time the TCS light activated as a consequence of an
emissions system fault.  But, if your TCS light is always on, it may be
that the intermittent faults are occurring but you can't tell because
the light is already on.

When it does go into limp home, the engine will easily stall.  But your
description of cutting out does sound more like the dreaded DI cassette
failure problem than a limp home mode issue.

You may be able to extract some codes from the ECU by following these
directions:

Update:

I reset the ACC and now it seems to be working. I think the front
outside air temp sensor is still not working, though. It does show there
is a fault. Is this something I should replace or just live with it?

When we first got it the Info screen under the tach/speedometer worked
and did give an error on one item, probably at the outside air temp.

Now, the info screen is dead. Suggestions? I cannot get it to come on. I
read the manual and tried to reset it, no luck.

And also (pickey, pickey) the little green illumination light in the
console box (similar to that in the glove box) does not work, even after
replacing the bulb.

Hand brake acts like it works but the car still moves. Suggestions
welcome! Is this a common problem with a common fix?

Where to get a reasonable price on headlight wipers and blades for same?

For DI Module (mine might be failing...)

Is there a Bently manual for this? It came with a Haynes which seems
almost totally useless.

Thanks,

Charles.
