Has anyone had any experience with this scan tool. Is it woth the effort??

What year Saab are you working with? I've had some problems with a '97 900.
It is not *entirely* OBDII compliant. I finally got it working with the
hardware you listed below, but the scantool.net software frankly sucks. I'm
using www.palmerperformance.com software.
Much more comprehensive and includes data logging. The ELM interface is
slooooooooow, so don't expect much real-time monitoring - max is about 4Hz.
With this combination I can monitor all supported sensors, read codes and
reset the MIL. It's no where near as comprehensive as Saab's Tech II, but it
does work well as a diagnostic aid.

It would be great to have software identical to the TECH-II available on a laptop with the necessary connector.

Yes, it would. However, you would still need a hardware device between the
laptop and the car's computer, as the signals to and from the ECU use
different voltages than the serial ports on a laptop. (If you can even find
a laptop with serial ports any more). USB is a whole new can of worms.
