are there any simple checks that can be done prior to bringing car to dealer
for the check engine light?

Check/tighten your gas cap.

Listen for vacuum leaks in the engine bay. An air pipe or plug may have
dislodged.

If you live in the US, Autozone Car Parts will read the code(s) for free,  
there may also be others
