Grunff - 24 Dec 2005 13:44 GMT Hi all,
I've been playing around with frappr.com, and thought it'd be interesting to have a map for alt.autos.saab, so we can all get an idea of whereabouts we are.
So, I've created a map here: http://www.frappr.com/aasaab
If you're interested in seeing where other regulars are from, go there and add yourself. All you need to supply is a name - so use your alt.autos.saab handle.

It won't add me. Despite there being some 6 ? St Albans in the USA even ( that it doesn't seem to recognise either ) . I just need the original one.

Ok that worked. But strangely the map doesn't ! I say strangely since I know Google has maps/satellite views of the UK.

The UK SAABs one is here: <http://www.frappr.com/uksaabs>

Grunff - 24 Dec 2005 16:31 GMT > Tried to add my name & location, but it didn't work. If you first click the "not in US link", then type the name of your nearest town, you should get a dropdown of UK towns with similar names. Then you just pick the town nearest to you.
Bear in mind this is an AJAX application, so it relies heavily on the browser. As such browser support is fairly limited, only IE6 and FF1.0 are supported afaik.

From what I remember, Safari 1.x (Mac OS X) had issues when I tried to add to the UK SAABs map. I had to use Firefox. Safari 2.x (part of Mac OS X 10.4) does not have issues.
Merry Christmas all,

The only way you can edit/remove your entry is if you created an account when you added your entry (yes, I know, it's very poor usability).
I've removed both your entries for you. You can now add yourself again if you wish, creating an account along the way.

Any attempt of doing something takes ages on my system.

And I can't create a new account because the email is already recognised. The profile says London, but the display says Birmingham Alabama! This may be due to session timing problems for my dial-up connection. I have now given up using the system.

Well I'm trying but it doesn't like any combination of Sydney/NSW/Australia or even using my local suburb/town name of Waterfall with a combo of city/state/country... Yes I did select the 'not in the US' link.
Sigh.

So more the latter, but not as much time as you might think - Google have already done all the hard work. Super idea though.
> Well I'm trying but it doesn't like any combination of Sydney/NSW/Australia > or even using my local suburb/town name of Waterfall with a combo of > city/state/country... Yes I did select the 'not in the US' link. So after clicking "not in US", and typing in "sydney" in the City box, what happens? I get a dropdown with: * Sydney, New South Wales (Australia) * Sydney, Nova Scotia (Canada) * Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia (Canada)
If you don't get that, I'm guessing your browser doesn't support the javascript DOM sufficiently.
While I normally hate sites which rely on javascript for their core operation, I make a big exception for web apps like this, which would simply not be possible without javascript (or rather would be far too tedious to use).

MH - 25 Dec 2005 12:03 GMT > Super idea though. > So after clicking "not in US"... The Frappr! makers asume the world is either "in the US" or "not in US"... It would make it easier if there is an extra pre-selection window for a country, then in the "city" window they only have to show cities in the selected country. Also the cities list is not sorted; e.g "Santa Ana" is below "Santa Cruz", and I cannot edit or delete my own entry.
Ok... it's a beta version...

Grunff - 25 Dec 2005 12:32 GMT > Ok... it's a beta version... Oh, there's a whole load of stuff wrong with it - the navigation is pretty poor on the whole. But it's still a cool idea, and as you say, it's in beta.

>The Frappr! makers asume the world is either "in the US" or "not in US"... I won't go into the 'USA thinks non-US citizens are "aliens"' line... 8-) Makes us think we're 'invading' the personal space occupied by the USA but it's all just a myth. lol
But this is a common problem with US-based online checkout sites, etc. that for years have only understood US/Canada addressing, phone numbers, etc. It's changing as more and more people use online services. I guess the Frappr folks are starting from something that works ok then will add more i18n (internationalisation) support and better web client support later.

Well guess what - I worked out that if I type in 'sydney australia' all in lower case with just a single space in between' it works! I got a very long list of cities to choose from which included much more than just the three known Sydney variants. So that could still indicate something not working right however I should know be visible in the list of members.
I did notice that the message to others can't include any HTML code. 8-)
