if you look at the photo in the link there is a black thing in the
radiator hose

what is it and what does it do?

It's a screenwash heater.

Hey I'd forgotten about those! I made a poor mans version by wrapping
several turns of the screenwasher pipe around the hose on my old 900. It
seemed to work and all...!
Looks like I'll have to do a D & C on the IAC valve on my 9k - the idling is
getting erratic again too...

What is this on the exhaust manifold?

It's isolating material. Keeps the exhaust temp higher = faster spool-up.

What does the exhaust manifold look like? Is there a gap in the middle of
the mounting pad between the two pairs of pipes? Are there different types
of exhaust manifold or are they all the same (9000).

This was a serious question (no joke), but nobody answered. Obviously, the
exhaust manifold gets considerable hotter than the engine block, so the
mounting would have problems with thermal expansion. That is why I asked
the question; to find out on what it should look like if it's OK and what
to look out for if not OK.
