New Saab five-door is sporty
Saab has just begun selling a five-door version of the 9-3 sedan. But
don't go calling this new version of the 9-3 a station wagon. Saab,
very enthusiastically -- and deliberately -- refers to its newest
iteration as the "Sport Combi."

Yes, all is true. Even the roaring sound of the dual pipe exhaust is
special. Except in Canada (Quebec at least), we don't have that driving
school in the package. If snow/ice driving is of utmost importance in North
America, it's here ! Ah marketing people, go figure ;(

It's a play on the current market preference for calling anything that is
not a 'large' 4wd vehicle a SUV. Toyata calls their new Hilux an AUV here -
probably the same in the US where the new Hilux is about the same size as
those ugly F-trucks, mini-Hummers, etc. They're huge vehicles here.

Saab couldn't really call the 5-door 9-3 a SUV since it's not 4wd. 8-)

Craig.

Even if it was 4wd, it wouldn't be a SUV. SUV is a strange phenomenon that
I don't understand; probably my age. Our first family car was a Renault
4CV 750cc 21.5 bhp. Now people drive a Volvo XC90 to fetch a pint of milk.

and they have their own SUV called 9-7 anyway

That's not a Saab though.

What has an SUV to do with 'Sports' ?
Junkyard Engineer - 27 Dec 2005 14:20 GMT
Well, first let me tell you that I considered 2 SUVs before the 9-3 combi. I
say "I" but it's really my wife that wanted me to consider it. I hate how
they handle not to say the horrible gaz consumption.

But in all fairness, upnorth, in Quebec in particular, I can understand why
you need a SUV to drive on our roads. It's like beeing in a jungle. Not an
excuse, just an explanation. And why in the world, statistics shows that
most buyers of those SUVs are women ?

It goes just to the extent of the name
Sports, Utility Vehicle

Best way to describe them is Station Wagons in Drag.
for the modern Masculinized woman or emasculated "man".

Hm.  I have a station wagon -- NOT in Drag, it's a 9-5 Aero wagon.  Does
that make me an emasculated "man" ?

(Wouldn'ta bought the thing if Saab had made a hatchback in 2002, but...)

Don't think so.  Sounds like you bought a car to look and do the work
of a car.  Not a 1/2 truck that will only ever do the work of a car.
>(Wouldn'ta bought the thing if Saab had made a hatchback in 2002, but...)

I know where you're coming from.  Can't bear to part with my 97 9000
LPT as it still 100% and there's nothing on the market to replace it
with.  :(

Perhaps I should kill it and buy a Kia Sportage  ;-)
Craig - 28 Dec 2005 07:03 GMT
Nor can I bear to part with my '94 CSE. I have some minor ancilliary
issues like door lock motors, I think I need a new thermostat, and just
recently had the Heater core and Blower motor replaced, but the engine
is sound and runs great.

I have thought about looking at the Mazda6 5 door but I don't think ot
would hold a candle to my dear 9k.

Actually I bought it to be a sports car that occasionally does the job of a
pickup truck.  :-)  That's what I expected out of my previous Saabs.
Haven't had occasion to load 1/3 ton of gravel into the back yet, though,
like I did with my '86 900T ...

I'd keep it too.  Want to buy a nice 9-5 Aero wagon??  :-)

Although you can now have a mean looking Jeep Cherokee SRT-8.
6.1L hemi, 0-62mph 4.8 sec, 155mph but drinks like an elephant
and not easy to bring to a halt.
ma_twain - 29 Dec 2005 17:36 GMT
They shouldn't call it a station wagon - it has less cargo capacity than
a C900 hatchback. Sport Combi is a better description.
