Today I did a heap of miscellaneous fixing, investigating, etc. of issues
with the 1983 8V turbo car that I've bought. Some of it is pretty trivial
and the sort of stuff that you'd do anyway when buying an older
second-hand car in running, but not ideal, condition. Some is not trivial.

I posted the full list of today's 'discoveries' in the web forums at:

http://www.saab900classic.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=204

so if you're interested, have a look and offer some advice if you would
like to. The message is quite big so I won't post it here. 8-)

Regards,

Craig.

Noticed you had some power steering problems.  I have 85 900S that
started using a lot of power steering fluid and didn't have much
thrust.  A rebuilt rack is about two hundred dollars so I decided to
try using straight 30 weight oil in the pump.  This was three years
ago.  The power steering works better than it ever did an the leak rate
is down to about a pint per six months. I have even tried 20W-50 which
also works well.  Hydraulic fluid is also more expensive than motor oil
and is deliquisent.

I haven't priced rebuilt steering racks here in Australia. I know of a very
good specialist steering/suspension workshop called Roadholder Suspension
that's not too far from here (they did a driveshaft change on my white 900S
in February and I've bought some steering rack boots from them more
recently) and Pedders (www.pedders.com.au) list Saab C900's in their online
catalog of steering rack and suspension parts.

I prefer to use proper steering fluid as much as possible but if I find the
rack is too leaky then I could try thicker motor oil. I've got some rack
seals but don't know if it really is possible to change them with the rack
still in the car. It's claimed to be possible though.

Craig.

PS. Results of today's work on the car (mainly fuel system work) are posted
in the web-forums.

Pedders sell crap.  Try Swedish Auto Spares 07 3265177
www.swedishautospares.com. Ask for Barry, he is very decent and helpful.

Thanks for the tip - I'll give them a call next week.
