Ahem !

Just after posting about the longevity of Saab engines my '94 9000 cse
( 2.0 lpt ) appears to have developed a big end problem ( that's what
it sounds like to me ).

Does anyone have any bright ideas where it's possible to get a recon
engine ( B204 ) relatively inexpensively in the UK ?

It's back to the 'old' one ( '93 model ) for the time being.

That sounds *extremely* unlikely. It just doesn't happen on these
engines - loads of other things fail first.

What are the symptoms?

Driving into work last week, arrived realised the engine was making a duh -
duh - duh - duh - duh noise.

It starts and runs but the noise is apparent on applying some revs or on the
'over-run'.

Oil pressure is OK but I though that only normally goes along with a main
bearing.

The engine certainly was pretty loose and noisier than my older 9000 to
begin with.

Hmm, that's not a lot to go on (duh duh duh).

Thing is, it's quite possible that it suffered severe oil starvation
which wrecked the bearings, but the big ends would be really the last
thing to go. You'd likely lose rings and suffer major camshaft bearing
damage before that happened.

There are lots of things that could cause the noise, but it's going to
be very difficult to diagnose remotely. If it was my car, I'd spend an
hour going over it carefully with a stethoscope, try to figure out if
the noise is really internal to the engine or one of the ancillaries.

I "could" Sell you my clean "N" reg  FSH 2.0 LPT 9000 complete.  It's
got almost a full year Tax & Test on it.  But it is a 5 speed with a
tan leather interior with red exterior and no sunroof.

Though everything does work and  the engine will return high 30's on
the highway.

Just a thought, save you the hassle of an engine swap and all. :-)

Just out of interest what sort of price would you be looking for ?

Well........     I would "Like" 5,000 +  :-)

But I'd take 1,600   "ish"   it is taxed and tested till Nov 06!
For 2,000 I'd put on a new set of Michelin's and add a full tank
premium !

For less....  I'd take my home compilation CD's from the changer in
the boot !  (but I would give both sets of keys and remote fobs as
well as the stamped manuals).

You know how it is when you're parting with a member of the family
(selling a car or grandparent for example).  If you give your true
lowest price and it's immediately accepted one fee's a fool for not
asking more.

Even to this day I'm convinced I could have gotten another £5 for
Grandpa Merle if I'd only asked for more.  But that's the way it is,
the Drug companies only come looking for "volunteers" every now and
again,  Grandpa might not have made it till the next "recruitment"
drive.

If anyone want's photo's put your anti-spam email address down and
I'll send you some.  Of the car, not of Grandpa though, The Drug
company wanted all photo's and registration documentation from him,
for some unknown reason........

Yup. they've got an automatic with 136,000 miles for £3,995 and
another Eco Anniv auto tranny for £4,495.

You think that I'm not asking enough?  Damn !

That's twice now.   Bugger........  :-)
