Two Saab reviews

I have two really nice Saab reviews from the Boston Globe:

The first is for the new 9-3 and voices our frustrations with GM:
http://www.boston.com/cars/car_reviews/articles/2006/02/11/so_close_to_being_a_f
ine_car?mode=PF

The second is for the new 9-7x and, well, they said it was the most
Saab-like of the GM Saabs:

ode=PF

By the way, Royal for is a oerson not a dealership.

Note that the review you cite is eight monts old.

A very positive review of the 9-5 SprortCombi appeared in yesterday's
(Sunday, 19 February) _Washington Post_ (p. G-1).  The Post's web site
requires registration (boo hiss) but the article is very good -- and the
summary at the bottom of the article:

Purse-string note: There's strong demand for this one, but you
have room to bargain.  It's a buy.

Incidentally, for the first time (that I've seen it) in many, many years
in any US general-circulation publication this article includes the phrase
from which comes "SAAB": Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget.

Elsewhere in the article is an interesting comment:

Saab's current "Born from Jets" marketing theme plays off the
company's military origins, which, judging from the SportCombi
wagin I drove and the public's reaction to it, is a mistake.

I would suggest: "Beautiful cars for beautiful people.  Saab --
Bringing the World Together," because that is what I experienced
driving the SportCombi [in Greensboro, Georgia].

This article hits the nail on the head.  Owning a '04 9-3 I completely agree
with the author's general assessment...it's an "almost great" car marred
only by subtle attempts to make the car cheaper by idiots in the GM
accounting department.  It's unfortunate, because it wouldn't take much to
make it a great standout car.

What's interesting (to me) about the 9-3's review is that nothing that
they cite as detractors would bother me in the least.  It sounds like
trivial cosmetic things that they are complaining about primarily, or
did I miss something functional?

Some of the recent talk about the 9-3SS performance and handling makes
me want to relook at these for a possible next car...

Functionally, things _mostly_ work well in the car...but it's just the
annoying and obvious corner-cutting GM embued in the car which make it lag
behind its competitors.  Just driving the car on a regular basis you come to
two conclusions...1) it'a great car 2) it's built to fall apart quickly.
The interiors materials/components do not inspire much hope they will last.
And if they cut corners on the interior materials where else did they cut
corners?  By contrast, it's competitors (BMW, Volvo and Merecedes) have far
better fit and finish materials.

The performance of this car is not in debate...it's really a load of fun to
drive.  If you opt for a used 9-3ss be sure to get the certified pre-owned
warranty, you'll need it.
