Aircon Problem on Saab 9000 CSE

I have a 1995 Saab 9000 CSE 2.3 Turbo.  I bought it back in Jan 06.

I've noticed a problem with the climate control.  It works fine as long
as the outside temperature is below about 22C.  However, above that
temperature it starts to fail - so that the fan still blows but the
cooling effect is lost.  It also tends to cut out when I'm crawling
through traffic (which happens a lot - I live in London).

It may not be related, but I have a temperature indicator on the
dashboard and when I'm in slow-moving traffic the temperature goes up
and up.  A couple of weeks ago I saw about 45C on the dashboard when
the outside temp was about 30C.

I took the car to an independent Saab specialist a few days ago and
asked them to check it over.  They said that the temperature sensor had
been dislodged so they put that back in its proper place.  They then
checked the aircon system over and said that there was no fault in it.
However, the problem remains so I'm not sure what to do next.

Does anyone have any advice/suggestions?

Thanks,
Alan.

On the aircon ... mine had stopped cooling ... all it took was a fluid
top up or something similar.  Apparently standard stuff for air con
units.  I think SAAB in the UK have a standard price of around 80-90GBP
to top up the unit.

I think what you feel up to 22 degrees is simply the coolness of the
outside air (the same happened to me).

There is also a temperature sensor on the dashboard with a little
palindromic motor inside it and a few electronic gadgets.  [Note I think
it is a temperature sensor it could be something else]. The motor costs
circa 40GBP and includes all electronics.  With time it becomes
annoyingly noisy and then it probably stops working (I had two replaced
already ... little crap things).  The idea is it shifts air about over a
temperature sensor etc etc.  I notice you are uk based ... so you will
find it in the centre of the console towards the steering wheel.  It
will have a perforated circle at its front ... like a penny in size.
(Sorry I will go and look at the car if you need a better description).

Hope it helps a little.

Regards
Charles

I have just been through all sorts of hassle about air con on my
9000... Do you know if your compressor is coming on? If not you won't
get any cold air! It has a clutch on the left hand side as you look at
it with the bonnet open. It should engage when you set your air con to
auto & low.

The little dashboard fan that samples the air also gets full of fluff
over time, Take something small like a cocktail stick, and with the AC
switched on GENTLY and SLOWLY insert it into the grid that covers the
fan. If the fan is spinning you'll get a rattle as the stick hits the
revolving blades. No rattle = fan not spinning. Either replace it or
try blowing it out with a can of compressed air - sort of stuff they
use to clean PC keyboards. From what I've been told if the fan is OK,
and there's a leak in the sytem you are talking of megabucks to fix it.
