I just bought a used 2000 9-5 wagon, after the first long drive we had
an engine light icon show up on the dash. Diagnosis by the defaler was
error message 420, what does this message mean?
Thanks in advance for your time

If it was a real dealer he could tell you immediately...

If it was code P0420 then that is 'Three Way Catalytic Convertor.
Malfunction', what this means needs your dealer to do some work and
diagnose the actual fault from the error code rather than just read off
what the OBDII unit says. Have you a warranty with the car?
This site gives you a description of the fault;
http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/generic/p0420-catalyst-efficiency-
below-threshold-bank-1.php
In summary, the second lambda probe that is located after the catalyst
is detecting that the catalyst is not performing as well as it should
(worst case, your cat is shot and the car will fail its next emissions
test but it could be much more trivial than that).

For information, Code P0420 indicates a check engine light with a error coming from your catalyctic convertor.
