I just sold my house, got a little extra cash burning a hole in my pocket so
I thought I'd treat myself to a new car. I've been researching the
luxury-mid luxury market - everything from BMW 745i to Lexus ES to Infinity
G35 - and settled on the G35 as the ideal combination of style,
practicality, safety, economy, reliability. Before shelling out $25-$30k for
a low mileage 2005 G35 sedan my practical side decided to do the numbers and
compare it to my 93 9000.
mileage:
G 35 19/26; Saab 20/32 US mpg (my experience)
interior:
G 35 adequate room, up to date styling & features, almost new car smell;
Saab adequate room, very comfortable
cargo capacity:
G 35 14.8 cu ft; Saab 23.5 cu ft!!!!!!!!
performance:
G 35 0-60 6.1; Saab 7.0
reliability:
G 35 It's an Infinity; Saab It's a 13 y/o 180k miles Saab
So, I got to thinking. The Saab still runs like new, all major components
have been serviced or are in excellent working order, with the turbo I
really enjoy driving it. Do I really need to spend $25. for worse fuel
economy, marginally better performance, somewhat better handling (I can't
remember the last time I was at a race track), a lot less cargo capacity and
a nice new interior??? In the end I decided to keep the 9000, spruce up the
interior (the front seats need restiching), get a new stereo, shampoo the
rugs, Lexol the leather, wash and wax it, invest the $25k in commodity
options (gold, silver, oil, uranium - you heard it here last) and save the
environment by consuming less. Once again goodness prevails. Now all we have
to deal with are hunger, poverty, global warming, oil depletion,
environmental degredation, "terrorists" and corporate whore/war criminals in
charge of the largest pile of WMDs in the world.

These photos are only of a very tiny fraction of the thousands of Iraqi
Civilian Victims who have been terrorised, humiliated, injured, maimed
and killed through British and American bombing of civilian areas in
various cities of Iraq. Due to lack of security, independent reporters could
not and still can not reach many areas to photograph and report the
atrocities. Several independent reporters and journalists were
deliberately bombed to prevent them reporting the atrocities.
Please note that some of these pictures are not suitable for small
children and those who have weak hearts.

PS. Forgot to mention FWD. I'll take FWD superior abilities in bad weather
conditions over RWD superiority in ideal conditions any day. I live in NYC,
not SOCAL I enjoyed watching a Mercedes CL sliping & sliding up a little
hill in snow this winter being passed by little putt-putts like Tercels and
Fits.
I'll give the edge in safety to G 35 with its multiple airbags and ESC. Only
1 airbag in the 9000 but it's no safety slouch.

You are fooling yourself to compare two cars 12 years apart in every
single category except the car payment part.

Oh sure... next thing you know, you'll be applying this logic to cell
phones and realize you don't need a new one every two years, and then
computers, and onward from there. Some time soon you'll start to think
that you don't need every new idea they come up with to sell you on TV
or via the mail.
I don't like where you're going with this. How do you expect the
economy to continue to grow if you don't replace everything you own
with the latest and greatest every two to three years?

Hey Still,
of course all that money will be spent as usual, only on different things.
An economy will grow exactly as before, only in a different direction...
Richard.

Yep, I can spend it on entertaining women!
Come to think of it though, I saw a commercial that taught me that
women only like guys who wear the latest jeans, own the latest
electronics, and drive the latest cars, so I'd better go spend my
money on that.
