Has to be done through a dealer - most will do it for free though if
you show a registration for the car (from a US point of view).

I have found out that if you pull the radio out. The service people
or previous owner will write the code either on top or bottom of the
radio. Otherwise, the dealer will have to tell you.

Yes brilliant move from a security viewpoint.

This is the very reason why you have security people. Humans will
often do things that don't make sense. For example, write their
computer password on a sticky note and display it on the side of their
computer monitor so that they will not forget it. Same reason people
will write the code on their radio because if the radio gets reset for
any other reason beside theft. The owner will not have to return back
to the dealer. I also, had two SAAB and found the radio code written
in the owners manual in the glove compartment.

Yes, when the dimwits in security started requiring everyone at the
very large (computer manufacturing) corp where I consulted to change
passwords every 30 days and implemented a "history" list to prevent
reuse of old passwords, little post-its with passwords cropped up all
over the company. :-)

Heaven forbid they should write it down and keep it in the house
somewhere.

Call the dealer with your vin. They'll tell you. At least in the US
they do.
