Hi
I currently own a 1998 9-5 2.3 Turbo, but am looking at a diesel for fuel economy (02
year)
What, if any, are the pros and cons of owning a TID over a petrol engined one?
Apart from the "usual" 9-5 ones that is ;-)

Just as they would be for almost every machine.  With the TiD you benefit
from lower fuel consumption, a different noise* and (perhaps) some vibration
at a cold idle.

It can still be thirsty, depending on how you drive it.  What's your annual
mileage?  If it's low - say inside 12,000 miles - and you're often city
bound, you won't find the saving material enough to justify the switch (in
the absence of other factors).

What sort of consumption are you seeing from the 2.3t?

*some people say it's noisier, some say it's different.  Most diesels have
more sound insulation such that the donk is louder under acceleration but
quieter at a cruise.

You are probably right in what you say. My milage has gone down quite a lot
as i am now not working anymore..somewhere around the 5-6000 a year.
Average consumption is around the 25 MPG  mark in the 2.3t

Gotcha.

That looks like a fair chunk of city driving, then?  I believe that the 2002
9-5 TiD uses the 2.2 donk, same as my 9-3.  The bad news is that you'll be
looking to return ~33 to 35 to the gallon from it.

So, 6,000 miles, 25 mpg, at an assumed 100.9p per litre (ordinary unleaded)
comes to near-as-dammit £1,100 in fuel.

6,000 miles, 34 mpg and at an assumed 104.9p per litre (ordinary diesel)
comes to ~£840.

Your annual saving is only £260.  The 2.3t will probably be worth diddly
squat when you come to sell it, the TiD will be valued a lot more and it'll
take many years to recoup the difference...

I cover around 25,000 miles a year and for me it's marginal if the 9-3 TiD
is worth it over say the 2.0t.  I'd expect to return ~33 mpg for the 2.0t
versus ~50 for the TiD.  Using the above prices my estimated annual fuel
saving is ~£1,100.  It'll still take a couple of years to recoup the
difference between used car prices.
