The SID should tell you if a remote battery needs changing, but if you
still want to do it, push a jeweler's screwdriver into the little hole
in the side of the key handle whilst levering open the back with a
thin blade. Once the new battery is in, go within range of the car and
press the unlock button four times to re-sync the system.

I haven't noticed any noises like that on mine. In my experience, if
exhaust heat shielding rattles, then it tends to resonate at certain
engine revs, rather than responding to bumpy roads. I guess it'll be a
matter of getting under the car and looking for loose stuff.

Very astute choice of model and year :o)

Thanks for that little tip Colin - see, this is kind of why I posted because
I would have just replaced it! I didn't know I'd have to re-synch it.
So the SID (pixilated naturally) would warn me when its low? That's nifty.

My 2001 SE had a tiny rattle like this. Turn out to be the break pads
rattling against the discs. During service they put some white paste
between the pads and cylinders to stop the rattle.
