OK,

Thank you all very much for your input on my last post.  I have found
a car I am considering buying, possibly this week.  It is a 2002 9-3
Convertible (SE), with the sports package.  This car is loaded with
every option.  It drives great and has 55,000 miles.  I have got the
dealer down to 12,100.00.  The paint is great, and the interior is
near perfect.  Does this sound like a good deal?

Any problems I should check for?

The first time I drove it, the engine light was on and it was in limp-
home mode due to an automatic transmission control module.  However,
they changed this out and it now drives great.

The only "problem" is that it is the brown (hazelnut metallic) color.
I didn't like it at first, but it has really grown on me.  It looks
very classy to me.  I was looking at a lazer red one, but it seemed to
be a little bright and showy for my taste.  If I wanted to have a car
that screamed for attention I wouldn't be getting the Saab.

Also, do Saab's have a blow-off valve or some mechanism that is
similar on factory engines?  I have heard they do, but I cannot find
any conclusive information that say that they do.

Thanks for any help.

If you mean an Open Blow-off valve, then forget it! The one factoryfitted
(from Bosch) is fine - it is a recirculating type. And secondly, since the
car has a airmassmeter, the enginemanagement wouldn't get the right
readings, if you use an Open Blow-off, instead of the recirculating type.

What currency?  Sterling?

Is this a classic 9-3 rather than the later 9-3 Sports Saloon (Sedan)?  I
believe a 2002 convertible is the C9-3, in which case, you need to check the
bulkhead hasn't cracked.

Rather than detail a cracked bulkhead here, can I suggest you check out
these links:

My diesel five door had a cracked bulkhead, which was fixed by Saab free of
charge.

What exactly is the bulkhead?  It is the first generation of 9-3
convertibles, not the new one.  The price is in US funds.

There is a "wooshing" sound when I let off the throttle.  Is that
normal?  Is that the recirculation mechanism engaging?  Thanks.

It's the bit between engine and cabin.

Wasn't this more of any issues on the 9-3's prior to 2000?  I have not
found any cases of this happening on any vehicles past 1999.  Thanks.

Can you be more specific about where these cracks happen on the
bulkhead?

If you look at the links provided in a previous post, I'm sure there are
pictures in the Saab Scene forum, which will make more sense than my
writing... :p

Thanks Colin, helpful. I will have to go try to interpret whether it's
the other side of the car on this side of the pond.

(Took my by surprise when it said "check with a torch". Over here that
would be completely different :-).
