Looks like I'm going to pick a 9000 Aero tomorrow.

Elder - 06 Mar 2008 14:06 GMT A 1993 Lplate that was on Ebay. My bid went in to late and I missed it. But I contacted the seller and explained and said if the winner backs out I'll match it.
He is emigrating to Australia on Saturday and needs to shift it. The winner emailed him and said "Can I back out. I've found a better 9-5 on autotrader and bought it".
The car was bought from Richard Elliot at Saabtec and he was going to buy it back if it didn't sell. So now I need to shift my old Toyota Celsior. Can't have two huge fuel chugging monsters.
Note to self: It is a manual, you haven't driven one for a year.

From the horse's mouth: I had a Fiat Croma CHT for 10 year, not such bad car, but not in the same league as my Saab 9000. The cars have really nothing in common. The doors superficially look alike, but would never fit. There is a world of difference. Both cars are 2.0L cars. Fiat Croma only 1153 Kg; like a modern supermini! Sure it helps the performance, but the Croma felt floppy, whereas the Saab feels 'flat' on the road whatever direction you point it at.

You don't see many of them.

Indeed it is. I have a superstition about green cars, but something drew me to this one, not just the cheap price.
Need to sort out that scabby wheel arch so it doesn't disappear in a pile of rust, but the rest seems solid.

It's a green colour with a zest to it. Odd that saab dropped the colour, but then they change every MY. Only boring germanic silver remains a stable diet.

If it is bad, you should consider one of those mobile fixers who repair dents and scratches. I had one to repaint a panel which had an old bad repair job from previous owner (pre-1997!). The fixer was really good and the difficult colour was spot on. It was mixed by computer to the exact saab spec, he told me. E-mail me if interested and i will return the link.

I think it needs a body shop, arch trim off, new metal (one small hole and lots of scabby rust), and repainting. For now I'm going to Jenolite it to stop it going any further until I find out if an Aero this cheap will have any scary surprises.

I would be fearful of an Aero of that age. How has it been driven? The gearbox is a week point for all that torque. Traction control is another problem. A bit more costly in fuel and insurance. But of course it has the glamour of the Aero tag and power corrupts :-) But probably not much different in daily driving than my LPT.

Gearbox was replaced 3k ago by Richard Elliott (Saabtec and SOC tech officer), he has done the maintenance for at least the last two owners.
It was bought from him by the last owner as a stop gap until he emigrated, and Richard offered to buy it back for £900 if it didn't sell through ebay before he left.
Did a 93 have TCS? I've wanted one for a while just for the seats.

I thought much of the car was galvanised ? It's rare to see much rust on a Saab IME aside from the A pillars which I reckon in both my examples were compromised by careless windscreen replacement.

NG900s are the exception, it'd seem - since they all seem to have very scabby (typical Cavalier) rear arches.

We had a 1994 NG900 until we swapped it out for a 97 9000 Anni a couple of years back. I have to say the NG900 was the most reliable, and rust free vehicle we've ever owned.

I don't know whether they are galvanised or not, but the rust on the car is very localised, and it doesn't look like bad accident repair as the wheel arch trim is very straight and very well fitted and the paint match over the area is very good.

Nel Frikandel - 13 Mar 2008 23:00 GMT >This, bar the paying is my new daily toy. >http://search.ebay.co.uk/330216571674 Whoa, nice one. I like the wheels on this, and the colour. So you decided toforget about the 9-5 then?
Elder - 14 Mar 2008 21:07 GMT > >This, bar the paying is my new daily toy. > >http://search.ebay.co.uk/330216571674 > > Whoa, nice one. I didn't expect to find even a scruffy aero at the price I got it for. They are some bits of rust on the rear left wheel arch and some slightly rusty chips on the roof. There is a bit of play in one of the mounts too, so the stick jumps arround a little, but it was good enough to pass the mot, so it will do for while until I work out if there are any other more major faults.

I have lots of photos of it. Either that or see if the local "Cars bought for cash" place will have it. The boss drives a LS400.
He had his for sale for £2500. If he will give me £500-600, knowing he will punt it out for £1200 (about right for the age/model/condition) the Aero will have cost me just a couple of hundred.
And it us up-spec, not down spec. UK/US models never got electric adjust/heated/massage seats in the rear, or their own full aircon system totally seperate to the front.
