A month into ownership the headgasket goes.
But not the very spectacular to see plumes of steam, bad running and
massive overheating, oh no, just a build up of emulsified oil in the
coolant and a slight rise in temp that made the fan run more often.

So I rings the guy that maintained it for the last two owners and gets
it booked in (Saabtec in Glossop) for a HG, a 12k mile service, a new
torque bush set (red poly bushes) and get the rear screen washer fixed
and drove away in a 9-5 lpt auto loan car.

4 days later get a call.
"Yes, the headgasket gone, must have been on way out for a while as that
was the very slight oil leak. All done except during the service
inspection the rear discs and pads are only about 4k away from
knackered. Can replace both for £100".

Figured I might as well get them done now, instead of another 2 hour
round trip and the required fuel, in 3 months time.

So, all the above, parts and labour £600. Shift is nice and tight now
thanks the top mount, fan kicks in less thanks to the new coolant, and
I'm going to degrease the front of the engine soon and make sure the oil
leak is properly sorted.

Nice car again now.

I think there was a problem with bad headgasket for the 9000. I had mine
changed, but that is 100k miles ago, fine since that. Problem was caught
early, so it didn't need head skimming.

I don't think this one needed a skim either. And the blow wasn't into
the combustion chamber, it was between water ways, oil ways and the
outside world, so I didn't overheat, so it didn't need skimming.

I pulled a litre and half of oil contaminated coolant out and replaced
it with fresh (it had accumulated worst in the header) and was able to
drive it normally for a week until I could drop it off.

I think I caught it early enough to avoid catastrophic failure and
warpage. It didn't even run hotter than normal, and now the
aircon/heater/cooling appears to work a touch better now the
heater/blower circuit isn't pushing hot mayo arround.
