I believe it's the same as my 1998 SW2, which is:
There is a cowling that covers the radio and climate controls and the traction
control, rear defrost, and fog light buttons. To remove it, look on the sides
for round plastic connectors maybe a half inch in diameter with a smaller circle
in the center. Push in the center about a quarter inch using a ballpoint pen
and then pull out the connectors. They should come right out. (Save them. They
are reusable. To re-use, push the centers back out so they stick out about a
quarter inch. Slide the connectors back into place, then push the center so it
is flush.) Now you can gently lift the cowling up and disconnect the wiring
harness from the switches at the top. Now you can easily see the bracket that
holds the stock stereo in place. It comes out with a screwdriver and a socket.
It might be easier to just replace the stereo by getting an aftermarket unit or
finding an OEM one on ebay. I upgraded mine from the AM/FM to the AM/FM/Cassette
a couple of years ago for about $10. (I use an RF-coupled mp3 player but I was
driving 70 miles each way to work then and a lot of the audio books at my library
are on cassette)
