I have a 2006 Ion 2.4 and have not had this problem. Does changing the
brightness setting of the entire dash help? (thumbwheel control on the
left side of dash)
Perhaps there is a bad connection and those digits are not being
illuminated at all?

adjust the brightness of the dash using the brightness wheel on the left
side of the dash behind the steering wheel. Turn it all the way up, if you
cannot read it , especially at night, you probably have a burnt out led or
fuse.
