I'm thinking of PC upgrading and going to Linux while I'm at it.

Is there any good guide to Linux pros & cons, what to look for, buying
vs free and so forth?
Will I be able to bring my old files over, perhaps via disk?

Karl,
90% of the computer work I do is in Linux. I don't see any problems. You
have to be a little computer literate. Mandrake 10.0 installs without a
hitch and is free.

What kind of files?

If your not afraid of a DOS prompt, then Linux should not be a problem.

Unless you MUST use a specific application that has no Linux support,
there are good OpenSource alternatives to almost every Window$ application.

last time I looked, there were 2 programs that did NOT have a
Linux equal..

Quickbooks, and Quicken..

I HAVE ran Eudora and Agent UNDER Linux.. Firefox takes care of
the internet part..
Open Office takes care of  MS word..

I like Suse Linux, ver 9 or later...
programs DO NOT force rebooting hte computer when they crash,
and you do NOT have to turn the computer off, EXCEPT to
add/remove hardware.

find your 'looks good' linux, and set up a duel boot for a
while..

it starts up, asks which you want, and loads that, so you can
run Windows and Linux for a while with no conflicts..

what are your old files??
might try www.linux.org  (think thats the addy) and read there..

Files are word and some inactive Excell on windows '98.
PC is old / slow and has no UBS port, leaving out scanner and digital
camera connections, I guess.
ZA say I have tons of suspect spyware.
Norton is coming up for renewal in a couple of weeks.
90 % of mail coming in is spam.

PC itself is equal to something from '98, I guess.

I'll get new PC and load with Linux things I need.

Then, plans are to put files I want to save onto discette, then run
through Norton before downloading into PC. (I may convert old 4 1/4"
floppies to diskettes and do the same with what's there.   (maybe
later.)

Does all this make sense?

my internet computer is a 98 (year) running 98SE, and I see NO
reason to change..
however, its also capable of duel boot, and has Linux in the
other partition..

IF you do get a new computer, get a big drive and duel boot it..
(for a while).. then as you convert things over, eventually you
can ignore the Windows part..

Both Agent (newsgroup program made for Windows) and Eudora will
run happily under Linux, using WINE.

Just play hardware games
Pull the hard drive from the current computer and add it to the new one as a
slave.
Some basic screwdriver work, and two junctions - a power wire block and a
ribbon cable.
There should be a connector in the middle of the ribbon cable on the new
computer.  Plug that into the old hard drive.
There should be a spare power wire set floating in the case of the new
computer.
You may need to change a  jumper on  the back of the current hard drive from
master to slave.
The new computer can still boot from the new hard drive, but you'll be able
to access the old hard drive.
Then you can copy all the stuff you want over to the new on at your leisure.

If this sounds daunting, then maybe the floppy route is the way to go.  Or
you can take the old computer to
the place you are buying the new one and ask them to do it.
