Hi guys,
I'm getting my 1953 Starlight ready for vehicle
inspection here in Sweden. One problem I need
to solve is with the speedometer. My dashboard is
from a 1957 Hawk and the speedometer is the standard
US version showing miles/h.
Anyone know where to find a 56-61 Hawk speedometer
showing the speed in kilometer/h. Weren't those used
in Canada too?
Or are there face plates in km/h available somewhere?
Best Regards

Thanks,
I checked out SASCO and the only ones
they have online are these:
Speedometer Metric partnr: 1555530
Speedometer Metric partnr: 1554894
According to a 1959-64 Chassis Parts Catalog these two are:
Speedometer Metric exc. K - Deluxe 62S 62V
Speedometer Metric exc. K - Regal 62S 62V
Would one of those 1962 speedometers fit in
a 1957 Hawk dashboard?
Best Regards
Michael

They may fit, I'm not really sure, but they won't look right, those are
Lark gauges not Hawk, and the will look very, very wrong in a Hawk dash
However, if you really need the speedo to read in kph to pass
inspection that might be what you have to do, if you can't find a
correct speedo used. I think the years you need to be looking for
would be 1956 to 1961, C or K bodies.
good luck,
nate

If you cannot find the speedometer head you need, go to a speedo shop
in the area and get an adapter to to make your MPH speedo read
correctly in km/h.

Adapter? Well, I suppose you could put in a 1.609 times adapter onto the
speedo cable, so long as you don't need to exceed the top speedo
miles/hour reading in kilometers/hour (ie, after installing the adapter,
you are only doing 56mph at the "90" mark on the speedo)... the trick is
to find a shop that can simply silkscreen some kph markings on the face
of the old speedometer (ie, put a "90" and a mark just a bit above 55mph
on the speedo face, etc, etc for common speeds in kph)

There are several speedo restorers who silkscreen the new face. The should
be able to give you a choice of MPH or KPH, not a big deal. The resto
should run about $150 US

SASCO doesn't have any of the Hawk speedometers, either in MPH, or KPH. I
have one NOS one left. It is in perfect condition and I'll take $200.00 USD
for it. Neither the GT Hawk, or the Lark speedometer will fit a 56-61 Hawk
dash. The units are of a different size and would require a great deal of
modification to fit.

If you can send me the face, I can screen print it. Problem is removing the
face without ruining the bezel.

i believe bob's speedometer can both re-silkscreen the guage as well
as convert it to metric. they are a regular advertizer in hemmings.
that is the good news. the bad news is that they aren't cheap. ed

Michael, Canada did not adopt metric for the highway system until
about 1975; long after the last new Studebaker rolled off the line.
Somebody, somewhere has NOS metric Hawk speedos, I'm sure.

Thanks everybody for your help in this matter.
I really appreciate it.
Yesterday I found a guy over here in Sweden
who's restoring a 1957 Golden Hawk that was
sold here new. His car won't be out this year so
he let me borrow the speedometer for the inspection.
However, I will need a metric speedometer in the future
or converting the one I have. Screen printing a metric
speedometer, as Bill suggest is a great idea. Maybe I
can find a broken metric speedometer over here in the
future with a nice face. I'll send it to Bill if it happens.
