We've had mention made here in the past about certain Ford and Dodge
pickup models that came with a 4 speed floor shift manual with 3rd
direct and 4th overdrive.
I ran across a couple of 80-something Fords in a wrecking yard in
Edmonton with 4 speed boxes. Does anyone here know how to recognize a
tranny with 4th over? Needless to say, the shift knobs are gone.
Trannies are still in place, so the simple expedient of counting revs
on the one shaft versus the other isn't readily available.
Anybody know a tag number, or perhaps a code in the V.I.N?
I can get these for $95 each out the door if they are the right ones.

I'm afraid I can't tell you how to identify one but I had a 78 Ford
Granada with one of those.
Six cylinder, stick, 2 door, battleship gray with a maroon interior,
second best car I ever had. Bought it with 100K on it, drove it another
100k and the only thing I had to do to it was replace the water pump ($20).

My father bought a '76 Granada, and it proved to be a very durable car
for him.

What you want is called an Orion box because on the side of the case it
is marked Orion. It has a cast iron case. If you are looking at a trans
with an aluminum case it is called a SROD and is junk. They are famous
for having glass gears (they break very easily even with a stock 6
cylinder!). The Orions are most common in Econolines and F100's and
they work well but do have a stretch between gears. I have two of them
right now and have used them in all kinds of stuff when I was looking
for a cheap overdrive. Hawkrod

Also I think there was a version of the A833 MoPar tranny that worked as
you describe as well, it was used in Dusters I believe

And 225 cid six powered 1/2ton trucks as well. I had a '78 Dodge 1/2 ton
Utiline short bed w/ the 225 and the 4spd OD.

That will definitely help for the next trip to the wreckers. This is a
U-Pull-It place, and they sell trannies for $69.95 plus $25 "core"
charge.
Why they charge "core" on parts that will never get rebuilt is beyond
me. Why don't they just flat-out say the part costs94.95 and be done
with it?

Well given that a manual tranny might weigh 50 pounds, and scrap iron
goes for what? $50 per ton, the core charge far exceeds the possible
scrap value.
I'll have to ask them if they will accept an equal mass of scrap metal
for their core, I guess.
I have no quibble at with paying real core charges, particularly where
the cores are scarce and are NEEDED for rebuild.
IMHO, this is just a gimmick to enable them to quote low parts prices,
and then bulk it up at the back end. Call it a recycling deposit
instead, intended to ensure that recyclable materials get turned back
in to the yard.

81 and 82 Ford Mustangs amd Mercury Capris had a toploader 4 speed that was
overdrive it was made by Tremic says so on the case the way to tell from
outside is the front lever for 3-4 is up side down from 1-2

Thanks to all who responded.
I think maybe at least one of the pickups in the yard had an SROD
tranny, as it seemed to be aluminum.
I checked out the David Kee website, and learned the distinguishing
marks for the OD toploaders.
I can think of a couple of Studes I won which would benefit from this
conversion.
