John Poulos - 14 Mar 2005 20:34 GMT This beauty will be headed to Md in a week or so. BTW, the 'engine turned' disks under the widow crank were done for the conversion to manual windows. BTW, I bought the 2R truck in the background too, story to follow. http://www.stude.com/Speedster/

John Poulos - 14 Mar 2005 21:07 GMT Funny, I just told N8, I'd have to engrave my name on the underside when the car shows up. <g>

oldcarfart - 14 Mar 2005 21:26 GMT Geeze JP, the guy looks like he is not far from circleing the drain, why not pay up front and wait until he goes for the dirtnap so you don't break his heart!
John Poulos - 14 Mar 2005 21:48 GMT Those pictures were taken awhile back when there was some hope for his health.Sal is taking the truck quickly to try and finish it in the weeks he has left and I made just that very offer to Stan. As sick as he is, he seems to want to get everything in order and leave as little as possible for his wife to deal with. I'll ask again if Sal could just help him get everything together for the Speedster and wait, but I can't force the issue.

Jeff Rice - 15 Mar 2005 01:02 GMT And that is a great thing! The NG, and chat, and the internet in general has made so many personal connections out there.. Connections that never would have happened a few years ago. Sad thing about chat, is you never get past the screen name sometimes. Bob40 mentioned Stan in the chat rooms and I remember many a chat with Stan present... We are so close, yet so numb sometimes... You hang in there Stan... The ride is awesome, isn't it? Jeff

John Poulos - 15 Mar 2005 01:23 GMT I just spent a half hour reading all of Stan's NG posts, and a light went on, "That Stan" <g> Here I am talking to him on the phone, sending him to my web page to get to know me and the rest, and all the while I've known the SOB for a couple of years. It's a damn good thing I didn't tell him I was young guy looking for his first Speedster as part of my smoozing.

That's the most beautiful Speedster I've ever laid my eyes on.

John Poulos - 15 Mar 2005 02:13 GMT Don't you think the pink is kind of "girlie." <g> Just kidding Stan, it's gonna attract some attention on Maryland roads.

Nate Nagel - 15 Mar 2005 02:17 GMT Every time I see that pink, a certain Rolling Stones song starts going through my head <G> But it is a sweet looking car.

Nate Nagel - 15 Mar 2005 02:19 GMT Just had a thought... if that speedster still has the original exhaust hangers on it, I need to spend some quality time under it. Don Simmons expressed an interest in repopping the driver's side tailpipe hanger in stainless, but neither one of us is sure what it should look like :) (I just kinda fudged something together on the 56J)

Grumpy au Contraire - 15 Mar 2005 02:50 GMT If you're referring to the hangar to the rear of the axle, it's the same as Avanti's etc. L & R are opposite pairs.

However, it breaks my heart to see an old fellow having to part with his pride and joys. It's like looking into a crystal ball, and seeing your own future. Play while ya can, guys 'n gals! Well said Dave. I was thinking the same thing as I looked at the pix. The look on the old gent's face says it all. Paul Johnson

John Poulos - 14 Mar 2005 21:33 GMT I suggested to him wife that he might want to wait a bit and to see what happens with his health, but they both seem to think he's ready to go. All I could think of is that had something like like that would have happened to a NG'er, we'd have made damn sure he'd finished the truck. We're lucky to have the support group we have here, in good health and in bad.

John Poulos - 14 Mar 2005 21:25 GMT Yes indeed. StudeBob gave him my info a few months back to help him sell the Speedster because tests showed he had terminal cancer, than another test looked better. As it turned out, the first test was correct, so he call StudeBob to give him some Studebaker parts he had laying around, He than tried his best to finish the 2R before he left us, but got too weak maybe a few weeks away from finishing it. When I next spoke to his wife, she told me what he wanted for the Speedster and we talked about a package price for both. When Stan told me what he wanted for the truck, I had to tell him it was too little for even a unfinished truck and offered more. ( I have to sleep at night) I plan on haveing Sal get the truck ASAP, finish it and hopefully take it back to him for a show or at least a drive. The old guy was worried about trying to get all the parts togeather for the truck so I asked Sal to take a day and let him sit in a chair and point to what needed loading. Bob commented that Stan would not let him take pictures of the Speedster because he needed to wash an polish it first. What a sweet old gent, he's spenting what little time he has left trying to tie up all the loose ends.

Lee - 14 Mar 2005 22:50 GMT I have to admire the old guy's detirmination to get these taken care of before he passes.
When I bought the four Hawks in Illinois last month, it was the widow who had to 'deal' with all the paperwork (death certificates, notarized letters, etc.) that the state requires once you are gone and finding someone who would commit to all four cars in a lot (the one decent one and the three 'turds' that went with it) .
As much as he loves the car and the truck, I am sure it is his love for his wife that is pushing him to tie up the loose ends before he goes. I only hope that when my time comes I have enough advanced warning to be able to do the same for Debbie. I know my friends here would make sure all was taken care of but would not want to lean on you guys for that.
Sounds like Sal will be doing him a hell of a service by trying to complete the truck and get it back out to him so he can possibly realize the dream he had of that truck being finished. I am sure he would love to take it for a drive and possibly head out to a local meet with it.

Studeman - 14 Mar 2005 22:01 GMT We had this same issue a couple years ago- when Carl Shontz passed... He also had several cars... and we left them at his home until his time came. I hope in some way.. they helped ease his passing.

Ya just never know when the fickle finger of fate is > gonna stab ya where it hurts. John Poulos - 14 Mar 2005 23:06 GMT I'm dealing with the opposite issue. His time is close and he wants the cars, parts and the rest to be gone before him. Thanks to StudeBob for moving the iron last year. I only hope that he hangs around long enough for Sal to finish the truck. Even with that, he said "Have Sal finish it for you if you want" I swear he's afraid we'd waste the extra effort if he wasn't around when it was done. If I have the advance notice, I'd do the same and I have a lot of crap to sell. Poor N8, he'll be working in my garage long after I'm gone. <g>
