They had a lot of damage last year right before the NCSDC meet in Asheville. I have heard it is going to take over into the summer to get it all opened back up.

Robert Black - 04 Apr 2005 02:54 GMT Thanks Freddy, thats the site I was reading today. Theres a thread going on over on the E-Bay message board where people from around the US and Canada are talking about their favorite bike rides, and this is one of the best according to them.

Official Site: http://www.nps.gov/blri/
The closed sections are only a few miles (less than 10 each), and easily navigated around.

I was told that the parkway should be complete reopened by the end of the summer and that my September dates should be okay. The end of the summer seems to mean the end of August. Joe Roberts
Lee Aanderud - 07 Apr 2005 02:17 GMT Is I-40 part of that? When I was coming back the southbound lane looked like it was still in the process of sliding down the side of the mountain, at one point it was completely gone. This was about 40 miles north of Asheville.

I have ridden it from below Asheville, all the way to upper Virginia. I just was up there saturday for the opening day of Trout Season.. (I got 3)It snowed on me! Bring your fishin poles.. (you need a valid NC or VA state licence, but you can fish parkway waters in both states with 1 licence).. Our Club used to have a June "Tour" and Poker Run on the BRP. We have done the sections from Va line, to Linville Falls...I hope to host another tour on the lower section to Georgia. Speed limit is 45... It's a nicer ride at 45! It's not often, but I have seen people getting tickets...(FEDERAL offence) There are alot of neat places to stop... I suggest you be in no hurry. Lu-Ray Caverns, Natural Bridge, Biltmore, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain (tourist trap)... and lots more I wonder if my BIL's bed-n-breakfast will be done by then? (3 mi from the Parkway in Sparta NC)

Robert Black - 04 Apr 2005 02:43 GMT Thanks for the imfo.I was reading that one damaged part won't be open till later in the year, but most will. Im thinking June would be best before it gets to busy, right?

Great trip. You could start it at Front Royal. VA on the Skyline Drive (Shenandoah National Park) and gain 105 more miles of fantastic scenery. There is an admittance charge at Skyline (motorcycles with one person- $5 for seven days, Cars, Motorcycles with two persons- $10 for seven days), but it runs right into the Blue Ridge Parkway which is free. Peaks of Otter Lodge, probably 80 miles South of the North end, is a really nice lodge and restaurant. Paul Johnson
midlant@earthlink.net - 04 Apr 2005 07:59 GMT Paul,
Would it give any excitement to someone jaded with driving California Highway 1 and the Sierras? I've heard about it, but that's a long way to go just for a pretty drive.

It's been a few years since I drove California 1 from Monterrey to the Hearst Castle, but my recollection is that it is a more exciting drive than Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway. They are both great rides. Paul Johnson
Bigbob62 - 05 Apr 2005 19:20 GMT I drove that Cal 1 from HalfMoon Bay to Monterrey and Pebble Beach once about 15 years ago. It was the most beautiful drive I'd ever taken.
Until we'd go around a curve on the mountainside and be in fog so dense you couldn't see the guardrails....much less the 200-300 ft drop down to the ocean just on the other side of that guardrail...then it bacame the scariest drive I"d ever taken!!
All in all...I"d still do it again in a heartbeat!! I have some of the most gorgeous photos I've ever taken anywhere!
midlant@earthlink.net - 05 Apr 2005 19:50 GMT That road is so famous, but a shorter, and more frightening (for the few who tend to be that way) is going north of SanFran on Cal Hwy 1 to Fort Ross to visit. Then come back a few miles to 12, head inland over the mountains and pick up the road to Calistoga and tour the wine country back to SF.
I do not advise fatlanders doing this in reverse, for obvious reasons!

Jeff DeWitt - 06 Apr 2005 02:29 GMT I can top that, and on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
One night I was driving my Champ along the Parkway, it was a very dark night with patches of heavy fog (actually the road was going through CLOUDS). So I'm driving along, go around a curve into this super dense fog... and my lights go out.
Needless to say I stopped, and after a minute the lights came back on, so a cautiously continued on my way. A couple of minutes later the lights went out again. I finally figured out that if I didn't use the brights the lights would stay on (and of course I didn't use the brights in the dense fog!), and I got back to my motel without further incident.
I've since added some wiring and a relay so the halogen high beams no longer trip the breaker.

Ron - 06 Apr 2005 13:04 GMT That's bad, Jeff, but vision bit o' fun Jane and I experienced last year in Ireland:
Leaving Dingle (fire away, Calvin!) and heading towards Castlegregory.... We are on a Very Twisty 1 1/2 lane 'road' about 200 feet above Dingle Bay. No shoulders, just rock walls at the road's edge. Driving on the left side in a RHD car. Sheep in the road, sheep falling off the mountain into the road. Sheep falling into Dingle Bay I suppose as well. As we are climbing up the pass we entered some really dense fog, and could barely see, when all of the sudden we do see something...Headlights. On a tour bus. A BIG US sized tour bus! And coming at us fast!
Let's just say that when we returned the car, we are glad the rental agency didn't look at the left side of the car, or at the bottoms of the car seats!

midlant@earthlink.net - 06 Apr 2005 16:49 GMT My first experience driving on the left was after 24 hours w/o sleep. I had to work my way across London on narrow streets, with my wifen having hads the good sense to fall asleep. All went fine tjhereafter until a week later when driving avcross what seemed to be a narrow bridge another driver came from the other direction. I said to myself, "If I go slow we will probably survice." We did.

> That's bad, Jeff, but vision bit o' fun Jane and I experienced last > year in Ireland: Robert Black - 04 Apr 2005 17:19 GMT Thanks Paul!,thats the kind of imformation that I was looking for. Our main problem is the seat on our motorcycle,or actually my GF's Dianes a.s(G).No kidding ,the stock seat that comes on a new Harley Low Rider is wonderful for the driver, but they couldn't have seriously thought that anyone could sit on that rear portion for any length of time.Even my 14 year old son Brandon can't stand it for much more than an hour.Theres a lot of interstate between Nova Scotia and where we actually start our drive in NC.Diane does not enjoy burning down the interstate at 80 mph for hours, only stopping for gas and to pee.I am an old iron butt, and can do it for days, but her neck gets really sore just from the constant strain of the wind, and the seat is torture. So this year Ive ordered a new HD Sundowner seat which is supposed to be a touring saddel, and they won't take a nickle more than 600 bucks for it!Imagine that,I don't know how they sell them so cheap(G) But anyway were looking to get there as quickly as possible because we can both only get a week off in June,s its interstate all the way.

[quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > lodge and restaurant. > Paul Johnson Jeff DeWitt - 04 Apr 2005 03:52 GMT Robert, the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of my favorite roads in the world. Beautiful road, stunning views, tunnels, the Lynn Cove Viaduct, hiking trails, camping, just a wonderful place. When you do have to get off it US 221 pretty much runs parallel to it, and that is an interesting old mountain highway and fun to drive too.
Have fun, and don't forget Skyline Drive.

Mitchell. It is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. Very steep climb from the parkway, but worth the time. Great views from the top! Joe Roberts
Robert Black - 07 Apr 2005 11:18 GMT Thanks Joe,Ill remember that.
