OT - Intruiging Honda ad

What is most interesting about the following is that contrary to past
performances, The Honda Company refuses to comment on the following ad
although it has been and is currently showing in almost every country
except the USA? For those of you who are Engineers - this is your Golden
Moment!

We are told that there are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the
film. Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see
it. The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually
very minor, didn't work.

They would then have to set the whole thing up again. The crew spent
weeks shooting night and day. By the time it was over, they were ready
to change professions. The film cost six million dollars and took three
months to complete including full engineering of the sequence.

In addition, it's two minutes long so every time Honda airs the film on
British television, they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of
us in clover for a lifetime. However, it
is fast becoming the most downloaded advertisement in Internet history.
Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in "free"
viewings (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this commercial!).
When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it
immediately without any hesitation - including the costs.

There are six and only six hand-made Accords in the world. To the horror
of Honda engineers, the filmmakers disassembled two of them to make the
film.

Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp, and
complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars. The voiceover is
Garrison Keillor. When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked
it and commented on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell
off their chairs when they found out it was for real. Oh. and about
those funky windshield wipers on the new Accords, the windshield wipers
have water sensors and are designed to start doing their thing
automatically as soon as they become wet. It looks a bit weird in the
commercial.

Hey, folks - I saw this over 3 years ago and it's a screaming fake!!!!!
The 3 tires are NOT going to roll up the board, and the muffler doesn't
have enough mass to roll that far - especially since it's an oval
shape! It does look fabulous, wonderful, and delightful to watch so
just enjoy it for what it's worth, OK? But, real? About like that fake

Yeah, I thought similar thoughts, there was a preface I didn't copy
suggesting that tires were weighted near the top to achieve the apparent
disruption of gravity.  Take look at the link from John's post

Here's my favorite "It has to be a UL" but it's not:

" In answer to the most frequently asked question about the commercial:

The sequence where the tyres roll up a slope looks particularly
impressive but is very simple. Steiner says that there is a weight [in
each] tyre and when the tyre is knocked, the weight is displaced and in
an attempt to rebalance itself, the tyre rolls up the slope."

OK, OK - what I should have said was - "It's not ALL fake". Some of it
is real, just very well edited together. Agreed? Weights or not - the
tires won't go uphill. The muffler is definitely faked....... - Chris

Chris,
The tires would go "uphill" if there was enough mass placed just over
the top for gravity to do its thing.  Got to look at it again to view
the muffler

Weights, or no weights. There wasn't enough force imparted to overcome
gravity! It was edited! -

(why don't we talk about Studes on this NG? It's turning into a damn
blog. I mean........ how long is the thread bashing Coddington by now?
C'mon people! Poulos - you started this!!!! Always yakking about

JP didn't start this one, I did.  I would think any gearhead would find
this a remarkable display of the physics of motion, ingenuity and
creativity.

  B. I did not start the Coddington thread.
  C. I did not know Honda was political
  D. What Stuidebaker topic would you like to talk about, start the thread.

I apologize for my senseless rant, but stand by my first & second
posts. It's a great commercial, but it's been edited. I'm logged onto
the SDC forums, too.
The next time I log on I won't agitate, OK?
John Poulos - 07 Apr 2005 19:11 GMT
Not to beat a dead horse, but the only editing was the multible
takes and the two parts. There is some money waiting for you if you can
prove they used any computer tricks. Lots of discussion on the Net, but
the only trick involved the tires. From the making of the ad:

" The impact is designed to push them slightly off balance in the
upslope direction, The weight falls, causing the tyre to rotate
clockwise. The tyre's friction with the slope's surface ensures that it
rolls upward, even as it's center of mass is falling. Conservation of
angular momentum does the rest. No cheating, Sir Isaac is still happy
with the whole enterprise."

Chris,

Don't read OT if you don't want to read anything but Stude.  Some of us get
a kick out reading the OT things.  And sometimes I read a few and then get
hooked on the rantings of some people and keep reading other times I ignore
them.

It is still a fun commercial to watch.

Yeah, I'm a skeptic too, but I can imagine the muffler being able to
make those rotations, even slooows down just enough.  I find the valves
hitting one another and finally the one falling off and triggering the
next event most facinating, maybe the most random event.  The fan moving
across the floor in spasms at the battery connections are intermittenly
broken from the previous action wave is also interesting.

The tires were indeed 'weighted' and the muffler may have a
cylindrical billet of forged steel within that will force it to roll
continually as the mass of the steel billet will enable the muffler to
keep rolling despite its oval shape.  Sort of like those five-and-dime
toy "Mexican Jumping Beans' with the steel ball bearing in the light
plastic Contact-C shaped container...

Craig.
