The wife has decided that we need to take a vacation that doesnt involve
spending it at a car show Good grief it's only been 20 years since our last
one like that...whats the hurry? So we are headed out to Palm Desert,
California for a week sometime this year.Several questions arise.

A) Looks like it may be late Oct./early Nov.when we go,hows the weather that
time of year?

B) Any places to visit not on the usual tourist list?

C)Whats out there for a car guy to explore.I figure on sneaking away at
least 1 or 2 days to satisfy the car fix.

A) Best time of year, weather is warm, sunny, but not oppressive as in
summer.

B) Joshua Tree National Monument - breathtakingly beautiful, one of the
best introductions to the California desert.

C) My warehouse. <G>

The NHRA museum in Pomona, about 60? miles west of there is pretty
awesome!  Well worth the $7 or 8 dollars.  I liked it better than the
peterson museum in LA actually.
If you dont mind wearing a tie, I have heard the nethercutt museum is
cool also!

I second the Joshua Tree National park thought. One of the most scenic
desert landscapes around. If you go on the Desert Queen Ranch tour (by
appointment only) you will be rewarded with a Studebaker sighting. A 37 & 39
as I recall. The desert has been kind to these Studes, but alas, National
park don't you know, their staying where they are.

How about the General Patton museum on Chiriaco Summit? about 40 miles down
the 10 FWY toward AZ. Tanks, military cars and stuff, kind of cool. The
south entrance to Joshua tree is right there as well.

The Nethercutt is a great museum but it is in  Sylmar about two hours
away from Palm springs.

You don't have to have a tie but must dress well, no Levi's etc.

O yea, almost forgot. The weather is great that time of year, should be
below 100 in the day. Can get very cold at night if the wind picks up.

And while you're out there, don't miss the Planes of Fame museum in
Chino, coupled with breakfast at Flo's Airport Cafe.

Don't miss the Palm Springs Tram, even though it is on the tourist list.
Take warm clothes as it will be 30 degrees cooler at the top.
There are some nice date farms in the Palm Desert area.
There are some nice shaded canyons with native palms in them that you
can hike in near Palm Springs.

Just got back from there. (Palm Springs)

The Follies is a good old-time vaudville show. Corney jokes, had-been
star. Lovely ladies in gowns so fantastic that fantastic is too mild a
word.
I go there every year in April.
Oh, every person in the show is over fifty, most over sixty and a good
number over eighty.
Reserve tickets early.
If you don't like it, you ain't alive.
www.psfollies.com

Nice air museum.

I visited a private car museum there.
Nice central house, surrouned by what seemed to be guest cottages.
Back wall of the first guest house came up exposing 14 Ferrarris. Most
front engined. Aston-Martin started at DBR1, going through a new car
that was being delivered that day.BMW had one from first series,
through bubble car era to latest. and on and on and on...
All regisstered, running and gassed up to go.
(Marilyn said not to tell you as it's private.)

Living Desert Zoo and Gardens just out of town. I haven't been there
yet, but it gets good reviews.

Palm Springs Desert Museum downtown. Nice art - been there twice.

Shop at "The Alley," Steinmart and The Seventies Store"

Street Faire Thursday evening downtown and at local college on Sunday.

Let us know in advance and we'll join you (from San Diego)

You noticed that I didn't mention the car sh  OH, schitt, Forget I said
it.

Check this web site for what ever date you end up here. It's got a lot
of the local So. Cal. car events in it.

http://www.socalcarculture.com/

Click on "events" for shows and "races" for any racing that may be
happening.

Not "everything" in So. Cal. is listed...but a greater percentage is.

Have fun what ever you do.

I am planning on a trip to Pamona (sp?) swap meet in October.
Mike - 13 Apr 2005 17:26 GMT
Oldcarfart,

Pomona..
All I can say is bring your walkin shoes!  Get there early...7am or
"before", the parking sucks.  You'll end up a mile from your car to the
gate.

Parts prices are normally "ok", Car prices are normally a bit high.
"Always" try to bargin with anyone you may be buying from.  If you see
a car you want....just get the number from the guy/sign/where ever, and
call them "after" the swapmeet.  It may be a little more inconvenient,
but you can usually get a better price.

Oh yea...did I mention, bring good shoes.
