For guys with small railroads, we used
to paint one side of a box car on
railroad  and  the other an other.
therefore when  they went around the
loop it looked like two trains , just
like with the Hawk

This is Gardner Martin's car.  Gardner died of cancer last year.  He
was a true "car guy", but probably liked Studebakers the best.  Had
quite a fleet including early Corvettes and a Kaiser in addition to his
Studebakers.  He was a pilot and owned a Citabria.   His business, Easy
Racers, designed and produced world class recumbant bicycles.  My
friend Bill has signed up to help sell Gardner's cars.

I remember going to a car show in Watsonville with Gardner 2 years ago.
He drove this Hawk, and I took S2D.  S2D isn't the fastest car around,
but pretty quick once you get it rolling (3.54 rear end and close ratio
4 speed doesn't launch to great).  It's got about 220 HP at the rear
wheels on the chassis dyno.

Gardner really wanted to race.  We punched off one behind the other at
about 20 MPH on a deserted road outside of Watsonville.  Gardner was in
front and counted down with his fingers out the window.  This was a
great speed in low gear for S2D.  (S2D can hold low until about 60
MPH).  I thought I'd be running right up his tail pipes when he got to
zero.  Boy was I surprised!  I didn't gain one inch on that Hawk until
I chickened out after the 2-3 shift.  My only "face savings" was that
he didn't gain an inch on me.

Quite a guy and quite a car.
