drivetrain vibration....

So I finally drove my '55 today... there's really minimal issues with
this car

1) no kickdown to passing gear, will have to readjust throttle pressure
linkage

2) fairly serious drivetrain vibration starting at about an indicated 30
MPH (3.31:1 rear) that doesn't go away, just increases in frequency with
increasing speed

3) minor brake weirdness - I think the rear brakes may be dragging
slightly, but I didn't replace that hose yet nor have I rebuild the
master cylinder.

I think I can handle 1) and 3) but 2) concerns me a little bit.  It
almost feels like a bad U-joint but both are brand new.  I am thinking
one of two possibilities...  first, the low ride height in the rear is
throwing off my pinion angle and causing the vibration.  Or ISTR someone
mentioning that you needed shims under the rear end to change the pinion
angle when using an early rear end with a one piece driveshaft, true?
The other possibility would be something in the transmission, is there
any failure mode of a flightomatic that would act like this?  I don't
think it's a bad flexplate, it's definitely a road-speed-dependent thing
and it also doesn't do it when pulling away from a stop.

Oh yeah and I discovered I'd forgotten to tighten the rear view mirror,
but that was easily fixed :)

replace "fly" with "com" to reply.

Could also be  that a needle bearing is not where it should be (in one of
the U joints). like it is lying flat againt the end of the "cup", rather
than standing up against the side of the cup..
Had that happen before.

Funny you should suggest that. <g.

Well, that cancelled out my mirror theory!!!  <G>

When you figure out what the driveline vibration is, let me know.  I've
noticed a slight rumble in my Cruiser around 20 mph or so.  It seems to
go away at speed, but my rearview mirror vibrates quite a bit at 65 or
so.  The PO replaced the right rear wheel bearing, but not the left.  I
was wondering if that might be the problem until this weekend.  Friday
night, the wife and I decided to take the Cruiser to a local fish
place.  I called some friends and they wanted to go also.  Long story
short, I ended up with 6 passengers in the Cruiser--it's probably not
had that many people in it for 30 years;).  Anyway, the vibration was
MUCH worse--sort of made me thing of a driveline angle thing.  I think
I'm going to go ahead and replace the left rear wheel bearing just to
be safe and to my knowledge the U-joints haven't been changed yet
either.  Maybe I should start there.  The car only has 54,000 miles on
it.

Did any of the passengers hear the moise
or strt yelling, on no, we are all oing
to die?

Our 47 coupe had a low growl vibration
between 2nd and third, could never find
it. new owner hers it.

No passengers screamed or anything like that, but the vibration was
noticably different with that many passengers than it is when I'm the
only one in the car.

Didn't Loewy say "weight is the enemy"?  He was darned right.

I got about $300 knocked off the price of Linda's Hawk.. because of a
major "rumble" in the rear end, when driven with 4 people in the car. I
knew exactly what it was (weak springs).. but still expressed concern.
At least it paid for the new springs.. but there was no real mechanical
issue.

Weak springs huh?  I never did notice if I had a lot of squat in the
rear.

If you haven't changed out "all" the engine/tranny mounts...definitely
do so....I also concur on the spring theory too.  Have fun with the
ride height.....And remember:  At assembly line check out, Studebaker
determined "ride height" with a full tank of gas and 2 150lb. persons
in the front seat.
