on my '55 coupe, the trunk latch striker was turned into the trunk area
and appeared to have been that way for years. I had to disassemble the
entire trunk latch mechanism to get it to work (the lock cylinder
assembly had been installed all wrong) but it didn't actually latch
until I'd turned it around backwards...?

I was the "victim" of a practical joke at the shop a couple of years ago.
I had the Lark trunk open and when I went to close it... No Go! Seems
that an enterprising doofus had reversed the striker...
