Hello: Does anyone know if the driveline-motor,brakes,tranny from a 42
Champion would bolt into a 42 Commander without any modifications. I
have the 42 Commander and a guy in my area has the 42 Champ with a
rebuilt driveline. My parts book shows some interchange between the
Commander-12a and the the Champ-5g. However, I notice Steve Allen
doesn't list the brakes as an interchange, but the parts book does.

I don't know for certain, but I'd be surprised if the swap would be a
bolt-in. Until '51 Champions and Commanders were essentially completely
different cars (most sheet metal, wheels, brakes, wheelbases, etc.).

I wouldn't recommend this interchange as the Commander is a heavier car and
needs the larger brakes and engine. Studebaker used this Commander engine
thru 1950 in the cars and into the 1960s in their trucks, so it isn't too
hard to fine a replacement. What are you actually missing?
(drivershaft?, rear end?, etc.) What part of the country are you located
in?

II'm in Fl. I'm not missing anything. The brakes went on my car,I
thought I could use the champ brakes which are new. No good. Also my
car has a wrist pin knock even though someone rebuilt the engine, but
still has good oil pressure and runs. The champ had rebuilt engine and
new clutch. Thanks,Sheldon

Sheldon,
The Chassis and sheetmetal are not the same between the Champion and
Commander just as Paul said. You should be able to get most parts from
Studebaker International or S/A. The hardest thing to find may be wheel
cylinders, but I recommend getting the ones you have lined with Brass
or Stainless Steel that way they won't give you problems with
corrosion. White Post or Apple Hydrualics can do that. If someone
rebuilt the engine they may have not tightened one of the wedge bolts
that locks the piston pin to the rod, that would cause a knock sound.
It may be just as well to pull the motor and check it over and
reassemble it. Over all the Commander 6 is much nicer engine since it
has alot more torque than the Champ 6 anyway. It most likely will be
best and easier to fix what you have.
Good Luck

A knock is hard to find. Could be the wrist pin. I once had a knock in my
Commander that turned out to be a bad timing gear. If you're lucky, you
can drop the pan and find the problem. Good luck on your project. I love
driving my 41 Commander and I'm sure you will too.

By chance will early C-cab wheel cylinders work? Those I believe are
still available.
