Jeff Rice - 23 Apr 2005 22:12 GMT Sheesh... Everybody is out working on their Studes! Courtiers ripping a SkyHawk Turners shooting goo on a Lark JP's finding out sanding still sucks. Poor Nate.. (It's tough being Nate...really is) Pat Skelly is shop building. Who knows what Drnec is doing (or what country he is doing it in <g>) Ol' Dave is in the hut cleaning Sheba for next week. StudeBob is re-re-reading TW (and still NG sulking) Sonny has a cold and is Nyquil impaired (and is also still ng sulking) Calvin is making love to a Packard (with a walker no less <lol>) I spent the day (so far) drilling holes in manifolds.... (I have an evil vendor story from he!!..... someday...) Jeff (rubber gloves are a Godsend with cast iron) Rice
What are y'all up to?
Pat Drnec - 23 Apr 2005 22:39 GMT I've been in country for the last month, but not home much - just got back from a couple of days in Palm Springs taking golf lessons and digging holes with a variety of clubs. It's work related, though - if you must play golf for business, it behooves you to at least act like you know what you're doing. Off to London for the Cream reunion show at the Royal Albert Hall week after next, then direct from the UK to Chi so I can get to SB in time for the good deals. <G> Still making progress on the Frua larks, slowly but surely. I'm stripping anything usable off the less restorable one so I can move it outside (under a cover) to await it's ultimate fate, whatever it may be. The Wagonaire is nearly stripped down for paint, and I'm still collecting parts for the 62 Lark for it's conversion from 3sp to 3sp/OD. Speaking of which, anybody have the underdash bracket for the OD cable?

Jeff Rice - 23 Apr 2005 23:11 GMT Saturday Follies just came to a screeching halt..... Danged Herwich cast iron... Drilled 40 holes and decided to tap them... Tapped twenty holed just fine. One manifold 'felt' different. Broke a tap in it (grrrr), but got it out ok. Went to the next hole, and broke off another one... This one will be a pita to get out. Both with new taps , and being careful. Put it all waway and walked out of the shop. Taking the evening off... Jeff (tapped out for tonight <g>) Rice
Lee - 24 Apr 2005 00:25 GMT Hey Jeff,
What are you using for lubricant while tapping?

Lee Aanderud - 24 Apr 2005 01:10 GMT Thanks, I had thought about swinging past your place on the way home... but I stayed south of you and went through Indianapolis. Enjoyed the drive both ways... except north of RonDameville where half the southbound interstate slid down the side of the mountain and traffic was backed up for miles (but it I had plenty of "the Pope is dead" talk radio to keep me occupied). I impressed myself on the drive, made it to Madison on the way up and Indianapolis on the way home before stopping... traveling with a dog is a little like traveling with a woman with a tiny bladder. May do it again in a few weeks, don't know yet if it'll be a good trip or bad trip.

Maybe I can do a visiting trip on the way up or back.
I'm also in trouble with my best friend growing up... I drove within a mile of his house both ways as I drove through Minneapolis. But both times I would have royally screwed up my driving time had I stopped.
Lee
> You came thru Indianapolis? Geesh, I'm only 20 miles north! > > Jim Turner Lee - 24 Apr 2005 01:45 GMT I can well understand what you mean about (not) stopping when you are on a mission to get somewhere or time is agianst you. A couple weeks ago, I took Calvin's new Packard down to him and was within stopping distance for JP, Jeff Rice, Jerry Forrester and Turner. However, I was also anxious to get the trip done and get back home.
Should I have stopped? Hell yes! However, that would have made the three day trip closer to 5 <G>.....

Lee - 24 Apr 2005 01:42 GMT I was sorry to hear of the circumstances of the trip, Lee. I, too, will be making a trip home in a few weeks. Leaving here on the 14 of next and will be up there a week. I am not looking forward to this one at all.
You made pretty good time on your trips! Normally, it is a straight thru for me to go from here to Valley. Right at 900 miles and can usually knoci it out in 12-14 hours depending on traffic.
Yep, that stretch just past RonDameville is a beautiful stretch of road but it is fragile land when storms roll thru.

Lee Aanderud - 24 Apr 2005 02:05 GMT I had time to look at the southbound lane closely as I was averaging 3 mph for about an hour in a split northbound lane... wondering how the hell do you fix that, half of the southbound lane is completely gone for about a half-mile. You can't carve into the mountain to move both lanes over and you'd have to bring a mountain worth of fill to build up the roadbase to put the lane back in. This was 40 miles north of Asheville and the northbound traffic was bumper to bumper all the way to Asheville... I'm guessing it was at least a 4 hour wait to get past that area for those people.
I was a little surprised to see I-29 from Fargo to Grand Forks was posted at 75 mph. Also got to see the moose that several people have talked about just south of Grand Forks on the trip back... he lays down along a fenceline just across the ditch in the morning and watches traffic go by. Pretty cool to actually drive that close to something that big.

Lee - 24 Apr 2005 02:30 GMT Damn, I guess a bit DID wash away!!! Sounds like it is time for a lot of blasting to make room for some new highway. I cannot imagine them filling.
Yep, that 75 MPH speed limit is great! Makes the trip from Fargo to Valley a lot quicker <G>.... I have never seen the moose but, then again, I do not head north of Fargo often.

Jim Turner - 24 Apr 2005 02:54 GMT Lee, When I was heading back to LA from the Estes Park meet, I took the road through Estes Park, to Colorado 13, a lonf straight 2 lane road, Driving mt 53 Avanti, about 25 miles or so North of I-70 there was a damn Moose standing next to the road! I became wide awake at that point! Good thing there was nothing coming the other way! I passed the moose I was on the other shoulder, I stopped shortly after that to change my shorts! <G> They ARE HUGE! and If I would have hit that thing, I'd still be looking for chunks of fiberglass! <G>

Lee Aanderud - 24 Apr 2005 03:03 GMT A guy I know from a neighboring town was heading back from Sturgis, SD from the big bike rally one year and got very personal with one. It was around midnight and totally dark out. The guy he was riding with swerved to miss it, and looked back just in time to see this guy's headlight go out and then a hell of alot of sparks. The guy lived, he's got a bald spot on his head to remind him of the accident... that and he can go into the local bar to look at his helmet on display where it ground down to his skull in one spot. The moose wasn't so lucky... it broke his back or dislocated his hip and he was one pissed off animal according to the other rider.

Lee Aanderud - 23 Apr 2005 23:12 GMT I went out to the garage, looked at my compressor that's been sitting in it's crate for the past 3 months and thought I should probably get that hooked up... some day. Then looked at my benchtop blasting cabinet and thought that would be fun to use... some day. Then I mowed the lawn and decided that the next house I buy is going to have a smaller yard or I'm going to buy a riding lawnmower.

Holy smokes, the Polaroid bears'll be snapping at your Jockey shorts.
Here in Alberta, it was better than 70° today. Bright sunshine, a bit of a breeze. I got a touch of sunburn today.
Don't worry, we'll pay for it with the annual May blizzard.

Jeff- I hope it rains a LOT!! :-) <g>
I won't be totally stude-free this weekend, though. I am taking a drive up to see Luanne Hall today to buy a few more parts. I believe most of her/Ron's collection will be in Southbend thanks to a fellow named Dave Reid... but if it doesn't make it, it's all gonna get dumpstered at/around the same time as the meet. Let me know if there is anything from there I can save for anyone! see: www.johnschiffman.com/pat for a list & pic of the parts...

stude-ious - 23 Apr 2005 23:44 GMT Got up early; waited by the ponds for the sun to come up; took some digital photos of the bitterns maiing their nests. Took the Lark out of the shop, Jane spent yesterday detailing it, so took some good digital photos of it. Took the Lark and met the local SDC'ers for breakfast; about 30 showed up, we do this monthly, had a good time, showed off the Lark, more photos. Some came back to the house for coffee and treats. Sold a NOS 289 crank to one of them, to generate cash for South Bend. Had to play with a new digital camera, check it out, before I mail it to my daughter in the DR. Now I'm having a beer, by the woodstove, downloading photos, checking maps for routes to South Bend, checking for motel deals in South Bend, and have a camera, on a tripod, pointed towards the ponds, to get more wildlife shots. I see a pheasant digging out some of my garden seeds, but took lots of photos of him yesterday. Have another digital camera beside me (a new one for my mom), but probably won't play with it until tomorrow.
Jeff Rice - 24 Apr 2005 00:10 GMT Thanks for the post Keith... I was lucky enough to stay at Frank's (an old friend) place in Dandridge, TN last Monday night (after visiting Rene Harger in Knoxville)... Anyways, We had a nice evening and I fell asleep on his front deck overhanging the lake (a perfect setting).. We had agreed to go out for 'coffee' in the early am with his buddies (he calls it 'court', where they solve all the problems in the world.. Jerry Forrester and Ol' Dave have different, but apropos names for it)... Anyways, I woke up early, early and got up and did the SSS routine and went out on his porch to watch pre-sunrise. Watching the birds, fish, bugs, and nature in general was a real calmer.... Then Frank got up, came out on the porch and farted and wrecked the moment... I was one with nature for a few seconds..... Jeff (and my .45acp Commander at 6am would have wrecked it <g>) Rice

StudebakerGeorge - 23 Apr 2005 23:55 GMT I have been working on "Pinkie", the Rose Mist Hawk my buddy got recently off ebay. All new brake lines, repack all the wheel bearings, and gathering tranny seals for when I yank it out next week. He has been buying nick nacks like mad... Have been driving my Daytona for the better part of the week and it's running better than it's ever run. I had recently discovered that the distributor (Delco window) was advancing too far and the vacuum advance I was using (Corvette application) was way too agressive. Stopped by to peek at my little gold car at my buddy's body shop; he has the jambs and trunk done and it will get color beginning of the week. See my other post about that little jewel. Hopefully picking up two more Lark parts cars this coming week. Busy, busy, busy... Monday or Tuesday my friend's new truck will arrive: I'm sure many of you have seen it. A light blue and white 59 Transtar that took first in class at Charlotte. He bought it at the Ga. state meet. He bought a speedster off ebay a little while back and caught the disease.. Nate Nagel - 24 Apr 2005 02:02 GMT > Sheesh... > Everybody is out working on their Studes! [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > > What are y'all up to? Actually today wasn't all that tough... looked like rain so I started cleaning and painting all the little parts I'd been ignoring... got my air cleaner done, spring plates ready (the ones with the sway bar tabs) heater box painted, reinstalled my clock, fixed my dome light, dug out a horn that worked and installed that (anyone have a Sparton low tone horn?) threw two late sway bars in the deruster (one for my '55 one for JP's '64) and then took the '55 through the drive-through 'cause I was hungry by that point! Only thing I discovered was that with the lights and wipers on I'm not charging at a low idle, is this normal for a Delco 12SI? I don't rememeber the one on my dad's truck acting like that. Other than that a pretty good day!

Alex M - 24 Apr 2005 05:56 GMT Hi Jeff
. Worked on the car for a few hours. I got it running yesterday and took it for a spin. Need to do a lot of tuning on the carbs but it will go down the street fairly well. The valves seem a little loud even though I adjusted them before putting on the manifold. Decided to recheck them today and see if I could get the valve covers off without removing the carbs. The left side is a real bitch. Had to remove the air horns and the lower air horn studs. That still didn't do it. Wish I had made the carbs 1/4 inch higher. Loosened the four bolts on the brake power booster and moved it sideways. Still no go. Removed the power steering pump and finally was able to get the cover off. Not fun.

I went to a farm auction, being as there was a '61 Studebaker there, "with a Chevy engine, since it's orange".
The car turned out to be a '61 Lark VIII Cruiser, and other than it was badly rusted (A pillars having parted company with the floor) it was a nice car. Interior door panels are cherry, and the bright trim is nice. Black with red/black interior. It sold for $700 to a woman who learned to drive on a similar car that belonged to her grandfather. It seemd to mean a lot to her, and it didn't mean more than a parts car to me, so I didn't bid. The car runs and drives; I think the brakes are shaky, though.
I didn't come home empty-handed, though. I bought a '29 Desoto coupe for the grand sum of $50. Gives a whole new meaning to the word, "heap". Worst case, I get a nifty new lawn ornament (get enough lawn ornaments, less lawn to mow; I ain't stupid, ya know). Best case, it'd make a nifty old-school hot rod. And it ROLLED onto the trailer, after I slacked off the adjusters on the left front brake. Hydraulic brakes, dontcha know? All the wood in the body has fallen apart, but the tin is remarkably solid. I figure I could cut it down into a roadster quite easily.
When I got home, I hung a wash job on the '63 GT Hawk. Show and shine in Calgary tomorrow. Even got out my chamosis and dried off the water spots.
It was a good Studebaker (and Brand X) day.
