I think the tailpipes have a lot to do with the sound... I installed
exhausts from Don Simmons on both my old 56J and my '55 coupe; I was
disappointed in the sound of the 56J, it was not very aggressive
sounding even with the "loud tone" mufflers. Now the '55 on the other
hand sounds awesome, maybe even a little too loud, but a good loud.
The only substantial difference between the two systems is the
tailpipes, the '55 system uses larger tailpipes. I noticed the same
effect on JP's R2 Lark, with the bigger tailpipes it just sounded
incredible (of course, the only basis I had for comparison was my '62
Lark which also didn't have a blower, so that comparison isn't as
scientific...)
A blower will definitely make the exhaust note sound more aggressive
when the engine comes on boost, but I think the larger diameter
tailpipes do a lot for the sound quality by mellowing it out some.
Might even get a deeper, smoother tone by using "megaphones" like the
Avanti exhaust tips.
just some thoughts...
