Thinking of Selling My 55 Prez

I'm thinking of selling my 55 President State Hardtop and I'm looking for
advice on a reasonable asking price.  It's a 259 automatic with power
steering & oil filter.  It also has the 8 tube radio(which needs a
vibrator)and a climatizer.  The car is an older restoration which drives
extremely well.  Like other Studes, it does leak a bit of oil and it is a
bit tempermental when it hasn't been driven for a while.  Here are some
pictures:    http://community.webshots.com/album/329849763vUgiTZ
Hopefully this link works.

The reason I'm selling the car is because it's time for a change.  I've had
the car since 1991 and would like to try something new.  Unfortunately, I
only have space for one toy at a time.

Any input would be greatly appreciated..

Tony - Nice car!  Others more knowledgeable will know how much to ask...but
if you go to antiqueautomobileradio.com (whew!) they might have the
vibrator you need.  (Or Bobbie's Love Shack <G>)  Ebay's probably your
best bet.

I assume you've already tried dropping the vibrator onto a hard floor?
(seriously.)

Pop a set of whitewall on it, list it on ebay with say a 10-12K reserve.

I'd totally agree with installing NEW Wide-Whites.. (Diamondback
Classics). They will offset the white roof, and blend the car nicely.

The next thing is to spend an entire weekend detailing the engine
compartment. Take one widget off at a time, and clean/derust and paint
it. Rewrap the wiring harness.

Have the wife/kid/co-worker clean the interior, and polish the dash bits
(0000 steel wool and chrome polish). Get out the camel-hair (paint)
brush, and toothbrushes.

I'd say that alone would be worth $2K over it's present (visual) condition.

Ray, you're right.  It does need a really good cleaning to bring it up

Thanks John,  That's the neighbourhood I was thinking as well and you
validated it.

If I'd said 7K, you'd have accused me of trying to steal it. <g>

You are an intelligent guy John.  And you've been around these cars long
enough to know that until you actually see the car, you cannot put an honest
or valid value on it.  The car could be worth $6K or it could be worth what
you wrote.  The market will determine what its worth.  I've seen too many
instances where an owner is told what a certain make and model will bring
(with no mention of color, options, mechanical condition, drivability, etc,
etc, etc ).  The owner now prices his car out of the market and someonwho
would like to have the car is left out.  Months or even years later the
seller lets it go for its market value which is considerably under the price
at which he started.
My President looked really good in the pictures I was sent.  When it
arrived, it wouldn't start, it wouldn't stop, the oil filter hadn't been
changed in 30+ years, the radiator leaked, the carb needed rebuild, the
entire brake system had to be rebuilt, the fuel pump diaphram was shot, the
driver door latch was shot, and the paint had more orange peel than a 100
acre grove.  If I had it to do again, I would paid the guy $2000 to $2500
less than I paid, or passed.
Now that fellow has a figure in mind, he's planning how to spend the money,
and when he doesn't get it, he's going to be pissed off at the buyer who
wouldn't pay "what it was worth"..

I was willing to give him his asking price of $7800. Since he knew I
was going to flip it on ebay he must have figured he'd get more. What he
did not think of, was I intended to fix some items and do a much better
listing it to turn that extra buck. I know it needed seat covers, and
the vinyl rood replaced and they always need odds and ends. It's still
worth the $7800, but I've lost interest after the guy went back on his
word.

There's a sedan out on the road right now that has had about half of it
repaired/replaced by a half dozen people along the way...
That's the way to sell it... Promote the sale as a road trip adventure of a
lifetime.. Heck with prepping the car for sale... Someone will buy it.
Like the wagon train trails of old... There are Studebaker trails anew out
there today....
Someone should make a map of the watering holes and repair oasis's....
(hope they don't tire of po' folk Stude types showing up with their busted
Stude's at all hours) <G>

I bought a 56 President about 2 hours from me on ebay. The owner
said "You can drive it anywhere" I barely made it home, one front and
one rear brake worked, rod starting knocking about 10 minutes into the
trip, generator was dead, the 'factory spare' was a old Sears radial. I
dumped it on ebay with a accurate description, took a bath, but glad to
be rid of it.
That sedan has been on the road for 17 days and he's still not home. <g>

Hi Tony;
Nice looking car. Looks like Ontario plates; where are you located? I'm in
Belleville.
