From Justin (The guy driving cross country in a 55) Looks like he
has a blast, even with troubles.
"After 3 trouble free days of driving I have arrived in Indianapolis to
see my big brother and family. I hate to say it but the trip lost a lot
of its excitment after the trouble ended. The last fascinating
distraction was in Lebanon Missouri where we visited with Les Schmidt.
He is a wonderful friendly and knowledgeable fan of Studebakers with
more parts than I think could be found in South Bend in the 60s.
I am surprised that the miles since then have been so trouble free. The
car still bucks and I am resigned to some valve work when I get home,
but the car gets where it is pointed and starts dependably every time. A
new clunk developed today somewhere in the driveline as if the back of
the car is acknlowledging the buck in the front. I'll check the u-joints
and rear end for adequate lube, but anything else will wait till I am home.
Part of the loss of excitement is from knowing that the adventure is
almost over. I would do this trip again and again. The places I have
seen are all memorable, but the people along the way have been the best
the country could offer. If I had a car shipped from west to east it
would have been faster and cheaper, but all I'd have then is a car in a
garage needing more work than I expected. Now I have great memories and
an education in car stuff I never thought I could have handled on the road.
I am going to try and put this all on paper and look forward to
reviewing all the pictures and receipts to recapture every moment of the
wonderful journey. I am going to miss the experience once it is over.
I feel stupid saying thank you over and over because it is so inadequate
and I don't know how to express my gratitude and fondness to all who
gave this expedition the least attention. It has been more than I ever
imagined the experience could be, and I am humbled by the spirit and
good fellowship I found.
Justin"

Justin... what a stud, uh, I mean a Stude stud. That is what this hobby is
all about.

I've really enjoyed following Justin's adventure and seeing him having
so much fun not only with the trip itself, but also with each and every
"learning experience" with the car. It's also pretty neat to see so
many Stude guys and gals ready, willing, and able to jump in and help
(I'll bet they had as much fun helping as Justin had with the
adventure).
I don't think I could do what Justin did. I know I couldn't leave home
on a long trip in an old car without preping the car and doing a few
dry runs. I know I wouldn't be as positive and upbeat as Justin after
the 3rd breakdown. I really enjoy driving my Stude and have done many
long distance tours (the longest over 3,600 miles), but I guess I enjoy
them in a very different way.
I'm jelous of Justin's spirit of pure adventure, his knack of making
lemonade out of lemons, and his ability to have hundreds of people
smiling and enjoying a long distance tour in an old car...unlike my way
where just the driver has all the fun.
Thanks, Justin!
