My newly acquired '57 GH Flight-O-Matic is not well.  I thought it was
just low fliud, now I may have overfilled it, but it is slipping badly
in low and reverse is almost gone.  Is band adjustment indicated?  Where
do I find those procedures?  Are they well defined in the shop manual
which I don't have...yet?

The factory shop manual won't help much.  Go to the library, and photo
copy the adjustment page from a Motor's Repair Manual 1960's vintage.
They will give actual inch pound and foot pound readings.  The factory
manual mentions using special over-running tools.  You need to drop the
pan to adjust the front band.  The reverse band is external, near the
dipstick. KK

Keith,
Thanks for the tip, I'll try that.  How about the overfill, is that
injurious?  What kind of contemporary ATF should I use?

Checked hot, in drive.  Haven't touched the linkage - yet.
