The potential of stem cell research is mind boggling. As I understand
it stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the potential of
turning into any type of cell the body needs.
The debate in this country is whither the federal government should fund
research on stem cells from aborted fetuses. As this (obviously)
requires the fetus to be aborted before experiments can be performed on
it many of us feel this is a really bad idea and that the federal
government should not be supporting it. That doesn't mean that the feds
can't do research on stem cells from adults (and there are some very
good results coming from that), or that companies can't do the research
on the fetal cells.
Actually seeing stem cells on that list is a good thing, it means that
people are hearing the debate and wanting to find out more.

Stem cell research is not done with aborted fetuses, it's done with
embryos, usually ones that would be discarding by a fertility clinics.
That's what the bill about to be vetoed would allow, now the extra
embryos are discarded, some 400,000 year. Even many of the pro life
folks think that it's better to use a embryo for stem cell research
than to discard it.
The Koreans are way ahead of us already, they have harvested stem
cells that are a genetic match for the patient.

I think you're being a little disingenuous here: stem cells are in
embryos and in adults, but not in aborted fetuses???!! Come on, now!
Some of us are just cynical enough to realize that abortion is big
business, and businesses would prefer to sell their waste to the
government instead of paying to have it disposed of, not to mention the
rationalization for more abortions we can see coming: "Besides, I'm
doing this for the advancement of medical science!"

Stem cells are in a lot of places, but we were talking about recent
stem cell research which uses embryonic stem cells and has nothing to do
with abortion. The cells do come from fertility clinics which I'll admit
is big business. Adult stem cells from fetuses or the umbilical cord
have a much more limited usefulness. (i.e., not as universal a cell)
The bill I mentioned only allows research on embryos that would
otherwise be discarded. What's pro life about refuing to use cells that
wil be discarded to save a living human being ?
