Some bad news from England:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hi John,

Yesterday morning, the car finally was delivered to Bristol.  The
excitement of finally seeing the car was tempered by seeing the car had
received a very nasty hit in the rear by something very substantial.  My
guess is that the car was hit in the backend when en-route on the ship,
or in either of the Ports.

For now I am unable to actually open the trunk.  The rear bumper has
been pushed into the car.  Apart from pushing the bumper into the trunk,
the driver's side tail lamp housing unit and lamp has been broken.  And
of course, there has been damage to the rear valence, bending it up into
the trunk.  Last but not least, the trunk lid has been bent a bit.  This
may be able to get back to position, but I may just put in for the whole
hog anyway.

It was a great shame, because it took some of the gloss off the day when
the car finally arrived.

My guess is that a whole load of replacement parts will need to be
sourced to just put the damage right!  Needless to write, I have
requested an insurance claim form, which is being sent to me.  I'll also
take pictures before I open the truck, so long as I'm able to.. which I
wasn't able to do last nite.  I'll also be able to support my claim with
some of the photographic images that you had of the car.

Anyway, apart from the small tale of woe above, I thought that I would
drop you a quick email to let you know that the car has arrived in the
UK.. just in case you were curious.. and wondering what had happened..

I will try not to become a nuisance with you, but I may need to request
some advice in the future....

In the meantime...

All best wishes
Richard Atkinson

and:

John.. Thanks for your kind reply.

Needless to write, I'm still very excited to have the car. Yes, there's
plenty of work to be done, but the car offers a good starting point,
which is the main thing!

Richard

PS: the car fired up no trouble at all !

AARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

was such a nice car too and only previous damage EVER was a light hit
to the LR.  (could only be seen with the fin off.)

I know it's not my car anymore but it still hurts...

At least the guy has a car. I shipped a car I sold on e-bay last year
and the car got a mile form my house and the truck flipped, totalling
it, a BMW and a Mercedes. I did not find out until the car was finally
delivered. Fortunately the fellow I sold the car to had insured it. Whe
he called and told me his only other comment was, it started right up,
crushed roof and left front.

I would bet the damage occured onboard the ship.

Transit is a dangerous time for cars.

I tow barred a 48 Champion convertible from OKC to Chicago.  While parked at
the motel, heard a big BOOM.
Next morning, the driver's door was severely caved in.  Had to knock 10% off
the price of the car.
