caliper clearance question

I got the Turner brake kit on the hawk just fine on Saturday ( it is
quite easy, just like the instructions say). The bad news came when I
tried putting the 14" Cragar SS's back on ( that's how I got it from JP
- looks cool, wife likes it). They fit with the original stude disk
setup, but are rubbing on the bracket "ear" with the new setup ( on top).

Question to the knowledgable. how much clearance is recommended between
the caliper bracket and wheel? I knocked a little metal off the bracket
ear, so it's not rubbing, but how much margin for thermal expansion,
etc. should I shoot for. I'm not going to put the old setup back (
calipers need re-sleeving), and I don't want to put original wheels and
caps on ( it looks too good with the ss's). Should I grind off more
metal from the ear, or get different wheels? Yes, I'm also in
communication with Jim T.

The only reference I've found is a 3mm clearance. Is that enough?

thx!

put some duct tape on inside of wheel, and paint the bracket's possible
interference area and go do some aggressive driving, circles and figure
8's on a shopping mall parking lot or anouther area off the public
highways.  inspect for strike damage.

Jeff,

The original equipment discs on my 64 have about 1/2 in. clearance between
caliper and wheel.  I should think that if everything is tight a 1/4 would
do just as well.
