That one wasn't so weird, but I looked around at some of the other mystery
auctions.  Sure are some weird folks out there.

They may be weird, but if they are getting people to bid and buy items
without even knowing what the item is..........they ain't stupid!!

It amazes me what people will bid on!

I used to go to the auctions of those "you do it youself" storage locker
places (this was in the 80s). Usually the auctions were for the contents
of a smaller locker, not car sized, but about half that size. Lots of bad
furniture,  bicycles, kids toys, lawn furniture, almost always a water bed,
but sometimes tools, electronics, and Car and MC parts. The storage yard
owner would use a bolt cutter to cut the padlock to open the roll up door
and then
the bidders could take a quick "walk through" (if there was room), to try
and figure out what was there.

Every once in a while the auctioneer would get bored and announce the next
auction
was going to be a "door down" auction, and he would auction the contents
before cutting the padlock and opening the door. The only bidders for these
(unless the owner of the contents was there and was bidding on their own
stuff)
were the used furniture dealers. The few times I saw this done, there were
no great
"finds" when the door was opened. They took a chance as they owned and had
to
remove, all the contents if they won the auction, and a few times on door up
auctions, I saw lockers mostly full of unlabeled metal barrels full of
unknown fluids
and liquids, that could have been hazardous or toxic waste.

My older brother runs a big UHaul Storage place in Las Vegas...and at
the family reunion 2 weeks ago, I heard all about the "rags to riches"
finds that have been made at their auctions.

We heard how one lady found a $1000 casino chip from one of the older
casinos that is still in operation. It was in a dresser drawer of a
piece of furniture she bought for $20.  She took it to the casino and
they determined it was still "good" although they had cycled those
chips out of circulation years ago. Seems they used to drill a hole or
cut a notch in the edge of them when they would take them out of play
and sell them as 'souvenirs'. This one was still pristine...and they
told her she could probably get more than face value for it on Ebay or
some other auction...but she just wanted her $1K!

One guy bought a large unit full of "furniture boxes" stacked floor to
ceiling, wall to wall and never opened. Turned out they were all
imported Danish Oak high $$$ pieces from a furniture broker who had
died. The bidder made over $100,000 on that deal!

Of course, we also heard how people have bid on some things, thinking
they were valuable, then discovered they were crap and got disgusted
and walked off, leaving it there to be disposed of.

Oh well...just had to recount a few "stories" for the "mystery box"
thread.

Bob (Hey! I think that was my chip the lady found!)

Heck, I have some 'mystery boxes' right here in my shop.
I moved here 10+ years ago and still haven't unpacked 'em.
They 'must' be important (but I don't remember what is in them).
Jeff (and a couple from the move 10 years before that <lol>) Rice

I guess they don't get the concept of a mystery auction. Make the
bidder think there is something valuable in the box when there is not.
In this case, the bidder must think he's getting a car.
