I'm trying to help David Ward (Rogers son) come up with a fair market
value for his dads Avanti. (recently on ebay) I can judge the value of
the car, but what does the Indy history add, and who would be most
interested ?  I'd like any input I can get before I call him back.

Perhaps someone at the Indy 500 museum?
John Poulos - 03 Aug 2005 19:30 GMT
That's where it came from.

I have on my lark wagon pictures of Churchill with the original owners,
telegrams on the purchase, copy of Studebaker news on the car, title
copies as well as california DMV records on every owner and and the
license frame, plaque mounted on the glove box door and the envelope
that Studebaker sent out in 1959 with the press releases on the car as
well as the watch the Churchill gave Mrs Herzog. Now taking into
account the normally a 59 2 door wagon  would be worth X amount of
dollars, when I put it to the NG everyone seemed to think it would add
500.00 to the value at the time. I think when I am finished with the
car that is would really add at least 500 if not more to the car.

What docs do you have on the Avanti? Because Avanti's are low
production cars vs the lark I would think it should add 2K to the
value, depending on how well it is documented.

I've contacted George Krim who looked up that factory build sheet, I
have the Studebaker ad with the cars presentation to Roger. Rogers son
will raid the family photo album for more pix. BTW, the build sheet has
"Hold for Roger Ward written in it." He'll need well more than a 2K
premium since he's paid for a very expensive restoration.

Is this the car that was on Ebay that Ward did not want? The R2?
John Poulos - 04 Aug 2005 02:39 GMT
No, it is the R1 he wanted and got.

John,

Came up as an invalid item, but thats ok, I can't afford it anyway!

If Rogers son comes up with the original to match the ad, or another
pic with Sherwood give the keys to Roger I am going out on a limb here
but say 5K prem to own a piece of history like that.

Why would the car that Rodger did not take be worth much ? The one his
son has is the car Studebaker built and shipped to Rodger for winning at
Indy. The car in the picture was probably a early factory prototype
since that's all they had that early. He probably would not have
received that very car even he wanted it. He ordered the car he wanted,
but it was white with the orange interior just like in the pix, but he
wanted AC.

So the car in the ad is not the car that Roger got I take?  Am I
missing part of the story somewhere?

The Indy 500 is the end of May, the ad ran shortly after that, the
first production car was built in June, his car was built in July,
delivered in Aug. The ad probably was a early prototype, maybe a erlier
car.(his was R 1034) The text of the ad says:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are proud that Roger Ward is the first Studebaker Avanti owner, for
this is a car built not only for knowledgeable drivers, but for all
admirers of exceptional automobiles. As such, every Avanti will be
carefully inspected through every phase of manufacture and road tested
before shipment from the factory. Not only is Avanti performance
outstanding (0-60 in 6.7 seconds), but its handling characteristics are
outstanding too. Steering is a little over three turns lock to lock, and
the entire car is taut and precise. It's deceleration is as dramatic as
its acceleration. Caliper-type discs up front and finned Bendix drums at
the rear provide a superb braking system. And the Avanti seats four
comfortably in an elegant tastefully appointed interior. Bolstered
bucket seats, anatomically designed, help make long-distance cruising
effortless.

My bad, there is a Avanti that 'represented' this car, but not the real
deal.
