I was wondering what happened to the lot of cars and parts that Phil
had forsale.  Keith Kichefski was posting the progress on the web.  It
has almost been a year, has anyone bought it yet?

Not sure, Lee and I were ready to buy them, but could not get together
with the owner. (If this is the Avanti stash) I think he offered them up
again a few months back, but would not return my calls.

John,

I had just gotten back from a National Guard deployment at the time and
had some extra cash to spend. Plus I was going to South Bend near that
time so I told him that I would buy it site unseen.  After that I never
heard back from him.

We told him if we did not buy the stash, we'd take pictures and do a
inventory to help him sell it. I think he got upset with us for calling
every week for a few months trying to make a deal. He might have wanted
to sell the stuff, but could not stand to see it go even as he kept
advertising it.

That is exactly what happened.  The whole episode taught me a valuable
lesson, about trying to help people who are unwilling to help
themselves.
So that's it....no more....never again. Everything can sit and rot. KK

Kieth, Don't give up that easily, eventually, an answer comes... Death, you
see, comes to all eventually. Unless he specifies to be buried with all his
Avanti's, they will come to the market soon enough.

Man, that's a bit cold, even if true.<g>  I'd guess many of would want
to hold on to our toys as long as possible. If for example, I had to get
out of the hobby for health reasons, that would be a big chunk out of my
life. I'd hang on to stuff far longer than logic would suggest I should,
at least as long as I can still turn a wrench.
On the other hands, there are hobbyists that have not touched their
projects in 30 years, are pushing 70-80 years old and still insist
they'll finish the 15 cars in the yard. <g>

Such was the case of a formerly nice 60 Hawk that sat for decades in my
small town.  Owner was just as you describe and son tried to sell
everything when dad died.  He wanted $100 for the Hawk but the only thing
worthy of saving were the outside door handles.

Keith,
I can relate, I chased a stash of NOS Studebaker parts from an old gent a few years ago. This guy was a regular flea market parts vendor. He said he wanted to sell them, he even sent me the inventory list. I kept after him, politely calling every few months trying not to be too pushy, for over five years. It was always some excuse, he want to get some more stuff out of storage at a different location, his wife was sick, etc, The last time I called his wife answered and he had had a stroke and his daughter were going to sell off all the parts. I sent her a note, but never heard back. Probably some lucky schmuck picked up the whole lot for next to nothing. I've got  a similar deal going right now, which will likely end the same way. These old guys say they want to sell, but down deep they really don't.

I called a guy last month that was ready to sell. He asked me to
call in a week, but he died the day after I spoke to him. I'm now giving
the widow a a month or two to get things in order before I call again.
