Quite possible the customer canceled his order and the car sat for a
while. Many early build car were so titled.

Micheal, some states would title a car depending on when the car was sold
(vs. when it was built). Can you do something about it? Yes. Check with
your local DMV and point out that they made a 'mistake' when printing your
title. Take some documentation showing the breakdown on your cars VIN (or
serial number).
When I titled my '64 Daytona after bringing back from California, the
title listed a "1" as an "I". I brought my documentation, including a copy
of the build sheet, and the state made the correction with no questions
asked.

Don't try that in New York. My Avanti was built in 63, but first
registered in 64. Because of this, it was titled as a 64, as it is
now. I tried to change it to 63 but was told by the local MV Office
that it would not be worth the effort.
I also understand that Studebaker didn't think of the Avanti as a
particular year. The only people that might really care would be
purists. It's your car as long as it isn't misresented durring a sale,
who cares.
