John Poulos - 11 Aug 2005 03:45 GMT The do gooders are petitioning some of the IP's to follow AOL in dropping NG's :
Alliance for a Safer Internet says in part:
"We are appalled at the names and content of these newsgroups and we do not want this material residing in our community nor distributed from our community.
Finally, we remind you that AOL has recently stopped distributing USENET newsgroups. We ask you to do the same."
They messed with my Playboy's, they mess with my TV shows, but they'd better leave the NG's alone. <g>

Jeff DeWitt - 11 Aug 2005 04:06 GMT Some people have a low tolerance for freedom.
Yes, there is some nasty stuff on Usenet, as there is on the web, in certain districts of many cities, and in a lot of peoples minds. There is also a lot of good stuff.
Among the newsgroups I check out regularly (or semi regularly) are of course this one, a Jeep group (although not so much now!), six sci-fi groups, four gaming groups, four travel groups and exactly ONE with pictures of scantly clad (or unclad) adult women <G>.
If people want to find perverted pictures they are going to find them, no matter what some small minded people think. It was going on LONG before Usenet was invented, and it will be going on long after the Internet evolves into whatever it evolves into.

On the other side of the coin, in searching for a NG reader I have found "free" ones that are almost 8 hrs behind, or way too difficult to work with. One, that I found, once you clicked on the subject opened up, it goes away and you cannnot read any folowups, another I found was $39.95 Another that is $15.95 will not upload.
If evryone did not know me as being on AOL I would gladly dump it as all I used it fie was BG's, and then other things. Th eother things I can get anytime.

Charles Kunicki - 11 Aug 2005 15:31 GMT I still have an AOL account that I only use on the road, seems to me that with all the parental controls AOL has,and if someone wanted to ban content, they could very easily do that.PPC still has NG access but for how long, who knows?Local cable service does not provide NG's at all,and if the service is half as bad as their TV service they can keep it until they "get with the program" and offer higher speeds.
Whatever happened to the term "parental supervision" is beyond my comprehension
