Okay I know this car cant be too great since JP passed it up, but being
on the warpath for a replacement lark, I called the owner.
Price: $500.

Seems like a good buy till I asked alot of questions and looked closely
at the pics....notice the "intresting" trunk latches? Take a look at
the engine compartment shot, is it just me or is there something going
on with the radiator hoses, ie incorrect rad? Also the owner only has
had the car for 6 months, but never had a title (?!)
Also its it "california car", but the owner said "it has a foot large
rust hole in the drivers floor"
IDK....just seems like it dosent fit it being a cali car with rust, no
title....
Any thoughts guys? By chance anyone in the san francisco area that
could take a look at this for me for gas and lunch money?
Thanks,
Kent

also I forgot, the body tag is:
62VF4
941
and the serial number is:
62VI9954
Thats what the owner said they are. Is this an original V8 car?

The "V" in the vin # indicates V-8 engine...

Kent, it sure is, the 62V tell you it's a 62 with a V8, the F4 tells you
it's a Lark and the trim level.

My two California 54"s both had rust on the drivers side floorboards. We are
not rust free, just much less that back east.

Does the car run and drive? The hole in the floor would be easy enough
to fix. I would be more afraid of all of the mods done on the car.
Hard saying what shape the wiring and mechanicals are in.
Good Luck,
Nick

says the car runs and drives, but I heard aprehention in his voice.
Says it does smoke lightly (not suprising, its a studebaker). I'd
really really really like a well-versed studebaker nut to take a look
at it though, as the current owner dosent seem to know mechanics too
well....

Kent ,
Of course the interior is horrible. The top hose to the radiator should go
on the LEFT side, not the right. That says the radiator is wrong, but may
cool the motor just fine.
If the car is not rusted badly underneath, and if it's drive line is OK,
it's worth 5 bills, EVEN Jeff Rice Yaller! The V-8 and Automatic are worth
$500, in good shape...
Just thinking the other pricey stuff could be the brakes, but the body
panels look fairly straight, and seems all the glass is good. Headliner is
even in tact. Just don't look UP.
The good news is, LARK stuff is dirt cheap, and available. You don't want to
have to buy HAWK stuff, and you REALLY don't want to buy AVANTI stuff...

If it were closer, put some taxi decals on it and have some fun. Maybe put a
bubble gum light on top and put fire marshall on the side. Could be fun just
to drive around.

Ya know, my 63 Daytona HT has fire marshall stuff on it. My grandpa is
a volunteer fireman, so the stuff was easy to get. It's got the siren
and the bubble gum machine; with permit. It's also red and white.

Kent, The car looks neat to me. For $500 it could be a steal. I would
look at it or have someone look at it. Larks are just fun cars to
drive. It is misinformation that Arizona/California cars are completely
rust free, especially when it come to the floor board at the feet of
either the passenger or driver. Look at the design of a Studebaker
door. There is a "dog leg" about where the side view mirror is mounted.
There is a seal in that dog leg that goes south quite a bit. That
allows rain (yes we get rain) to run in and soak the carpet at the
lowest point....where the feet rests for the driver or passenger. After
awhile the soaked carpet and rat piss, rat poop, and any other stuff
that gets in a car, sits, rusting away the floor boards. The rest of
the car will be surprisingly solid....no rust at all. But the floor
will be rusted out on the side the seal failed. Very common.

I agree that the car is probably well worth the $500 asking price if
you are within a few hundred miles...even up to 1000 miles of it.
Once Kent adds the $1k or so to get it home it may not be such a good
deal.

IIRC, this car has been off and on the Bay Area Craig's List for ever
(6 months or so). Last time I saw the ad he was asking more than $500
for it. $500 sounds like a realistic price, but make sure it's what
you are looking for. Might be hard to resell.
